U1L1 Ws
1. Sketch a ball and stick diagram of a water molecule. Label the atoms and indicate the partial charges that exist in a water molecule. (2) 2. Which type of bonds are found between the hydrogen and oxygen atoms in the water molecule? (1)
Covalent bonds
3. What is the name given to the attractive forces that exist between water molecules that are close to each other and causes them to stick together? (1)
Hydrogen bonding
4. Use a diagram with 5 water molecules to illustrate hydrogen bonding between water molecules (start with one molecule in the middle). How many water molecules can hydrogen bond with a single water molecule? (3)
Each water molecule can form hydrogen bonds with up to 4 neighbors

5. List a few everyday observations that provide evidence of water molecules sticking together because of hydrogen bonding. (3)
A)Boats float on water due to the surface tension by hydrogen bonding.
B)High boiling point of water.C) Capillary action or the formation of meniscus when the water interacts with glass.
1 Water is a ___polar____ molecule. Water _dissolves____ many substances (especially other __polar_____ molecules). This property makes water an excellent ___solvent________. (2)

2 Use examples to explain the role of water in living things using the topics given below. (9)

a) Water as a Solvent
Blood contains water. When we ingest and digest food, the nutrients are absorbed into the blood circulatory system through the villi in our small intestine. These nutrients are then transported all over the body for the cell metabolism. Hence, water plays the role of dissolving nutrients into the blood.
b) Water as a Temperature Regulator
Water has high specific heat of capacity, which means they can carry a lot of heat. Example, we sweat during a hot day, because our body temperature is increasing. Water is squeezed out from the sweat pores as sweat to lower down our body temperature.
c) Water as a Lubricant and Transportation
