Using standardized tests to assess a person’s cognitive and learning ability is a common practice in all kinds of institutions and has been debated for years. The primary purpose of such tests is to screen out large number of applications that don’t meet the minimum requirements. The key to correct use of such tests is to ensure the content, format and process of taking the test matches with the requirements of the job.…
One thing Grant does consider is the reason why the MBTI is still so popular, even though numerous articles criticizing the assessment have popped up online in the past several years. He seems to think that the motivation for individuals to accept their scores, even when they may not be accurate, stems from a desire to embody traits we deem as “ideal” (Grant,…

Interpolation and extrapolation is the process used to derive AE scores. This is not an accurate representation of scores. It is an educated manipulation of numbers based on examinees and applied into a CA score graph. The scorers plot the AE scores into a graph developed by estimating information and not collecting data from those given the test. This leads to a further concern of scores not representing a standard to compare examinee’s results. The lack of a standardization does not give equal intervals to compare progress or a mean between…

The Maryland School Assessment (MSA) is a test of reading, math, and science achievement. This test provides educators, parents, and the public valuable information about student, school, school system, and state performance. Before the state could hold schools accountable for student’s proficiency on the new state assessment, proficiency had to be defined. Setting proficiency standards for Maryland School Assessment (MSA) involved determining proficient and advanced performance on the tests. The Performance Standard determines where the cut score is for students considered to be performing at the proficient and advanced levels. All other students will be considered to be performing at the basic level. (Maryland Assessment, 2012)…

An honours or AP student has to take several tests that includes; S.A.T., E.O.C., E.O.S., benchmarks, discovery, AP exams, finals, and other quizzes and tests their advisors assign. The state of New Mexico currently has a subject proficiency of forty percent in English and thirty percent proficiency in Math. Only six percent of all high school students in New Mexico is considered advanced, and twenty-nine percent is considered proficient. High school is a pathway to college, which is a pathway to a good career. A total of sixteen and one-tenth percent of the student body is college ready. Though testing is an excellent way to watch the students growth and understanding, students should not have their class performance based solely on their test score. Students spend more time preparing for tests or taking test, than they do learning or asking questions about the criteria. The undergraduates are taught how to quickly remember material, then tend to forget after the test, rather than actually grasp and comprehend the…
One of the great quandaries associated with the standardized testing method is the weight attributed to such inaccurate scores. A myriad of factors could effect the outcome. The technology used to administer the test has been known to malfunction as well as the scoring system. Mentioned in a PBS interview discussing high-stakes testing, is a recent issue taking place in Massachusetts. Multiple tenth grade students have found errors in their statewide test. Some were textual, such as the naming of James Madison as John Madison, or a simple mistake on the math portion. However, some errors were not grammatical but as one critic stated “ambiguous, where A is the answer they want, but B isn’t that bad...that really masks the true ability level of the kid.” One of the more…
Education consultant Ken O’Connor (1999) suggests eight guidelines for successful assessment, which includes a directive to not mark every single assignment for grades, but rather take a sampling of student efforts in order to assess how much they have learned. His approach pushes for a more standards based approach in determining grades, combining formative assessment to track students’ grasp of lesson concepts as they learn, enabling adjustment of teaching practice on-the-fly, and summative assessment in the form of a test or quiz, which measures the level of student knowledge and understanding after the learning process. This is also a valuable tool for the teacher, as they may be better able to gauge the efficacy of their lessons and unit.…
Academic achievement is commonly measured by examinations or continuous assessment but there is no general agreement on how it is best tested or which aspects are most important — procedural knowledge such as skills or declarative knowledge such as facts.[1]…
There are three taxonomies. Which of the three to use for a given measurable student outcome depends upon the original goal to which the measurable student outcome is connected. There are knowledge-based goals, skills-based goals, and affective goals (affective: values, attitudes, and interests); accordingly, there is a taxonomy for each. Within each taxonomy, levels of expertise are listed in order of increasing complexity. Measurable student outcomes that require the higher levels of expertise…
