Uglies Chapter Summaries

The book I read for the this class is Uglies. Uglies is about a girl named Tally. In this dystopian world when you turn sixteen, there is a operation done to make everyone stunningly beautiful. When Tally sneaks into New Pretty Town to see her friend Piris. When she sees him she notices that his personality has changed along with his face. When she gets back to Uglevill she meets Shay. Shay is a rebellious girl who doesn't want to be pretty. She talks about a place called the smoke. When she runs away to this place she leaves a note for Tally if she wants to follow. On the day of Tally’s operation people called Special Circumstances kidnap her and give her a choice. Find Shay and giveaway the Smoke location or be ugly for life. She chooses to find the smoke and, when she gets there she wants to
stay.
The heart shaped pendant that would give away the Smokes location. In an attempt to rid of it, she threw it in a fire. Unfortunately that set it off. Therefor Special Circumstances were there the next day. Once they had her in their custody, she escaped and saved her new friends. As is would appear that the operation also puts a lesion in your brain that changes the way you think. Fortunately there may be a cure to return a natural way of thinking, but, they don’t have a willing test subject who has had the operation. At least that is until Tally volunteers. She writes a letter saying that she is a willing test subject, then she turns herself in. The author who created this dystopian world is Scott Westerfeld. He currently lives in Texas and is fifty four years old. He has written a total of eighteen novels. Uglies is his most famous novel. The main theme is Uglies is appearance. This theme is important in Uglies and in real
life.
In Uglies kids are lead to believe that they are ugly until that have the operation.”Because we’re so ugly, Skinny, that’s why.”(Uglies, Scott Westerfeld 37)They think that they are all ugly, and they seem to think that it affects what they do and how they act.”Worse, she was ugly”(Uglies, Scott Westerfeld 7) But still they don't do anything to change that for example eating disorders. Instead they just wait until they get the operation. Unfortunately, in the real world, people do have to deal with eating disorders, bullying, and suicides over looks. Social media can induce these things. Social media is setting unrealistic standards with photoshop, makeup, and posing.
This world seems impossible now but, will it be in the future? With all the power that appearance has now this dystopian world may not be that far off. A solution for this problem is to stop setting these impossible standards on social media,or stop judging people on how pretty they face is and how beautiful their souls are. Instead of trying to be the best looking we all should try to be the best people we can.
