The Rwandan Genocide
The Rwandan genocide was the mass killing of the Tutsis by the Hutus. The Rwandan genocide began on April 6, 1994. The genocide took place in the Rwanda. Rwanda is located in east-central Africa. The Tutsis and the Hutus are two tribes that were colonized by the Europeans in 1894. The Tutsis were given more responsibilities and power because of their physical characteristics. The Germans thought the Tutsis had a more European appearance so the Tutsis were given these powers. The Rwanda genocide was caused by a dominance battle. The two tribes didn’t want the other tribe to rule over them. On April 6, 1994, the president of Rwanda, Juvénal Habyarimana, was killed in a plane crash caused by an air missile shooting. The Hutus blamed the assassination of the president on the Tutsis and took this as an opportunity to get rid of them. The genocide lasted for 100 days. From april 6th to july 16 in the year 1994, an estimated 800,000 to 1 million Tutsis and Hutus were murdered. This happened after the Belgian troop were withdrawn. In central africa where this incident occurred the living conditions have been restored to a balance but this hatred will forever live on in the hearts of the hutus and the tutsis. In this short amount of months 6 innocent people were killed and murdered ever minute. This tragic event quickly drew the attention of America. The United States and the Western world did not intervene in the 1994 Rwanda genocide due to economic disinterest, political apathy, and African prejudice, despite distinct knowledge of the genocide. The term genocide was sensitive and not used until after all the murdering came to an end, if the term was use and enforced the U.N. would of had to get
