Odysseus is gone from Ithaka for many years, and his hall is now teeming with suitors who wish to marry his wife, Penelope. Odysseus learns of this comes up with a clever plan with his son to reclaim his household. Odysseus and his son are outnumbered, and they know they cannot reclaim their house with just weaponry. With the help of Athena, Odysseus is disguised as a beggar. wearing “an old tunic, a foul cloak, upon him, / tattered, filthy, stained by greasy smoke, / and over that a mangy big buck skin” (XIII.543-546). This disguise greatly contrasts what is associated with great Odysseus, fooling everyone, and “the swineherd later on will take me down the port-side trail--a beggar by my looks; hangdog and old” (XVI .322-324). He infiltrates his home unnoticed, and this allows him to find out who is loyal to him through the words they speak. For example, he learns the cowman is devoted to him, saying that “tears came to my eyes, remembering / Odysseus: rags like these he may be wearing” (XX.225-226). The thought of his old king in rags, away from home causes him to tear him up, revealing that he is loyal. Odysseus also tells his son to “round up all armor, lances, gear of war / left in our hall, and stow the lot away” (XVI. 337-338) and to “put aside two broadswords and two spears / for our own use” (XVI 352-353). Odysseus is shrewd, knowing that he must hide away the weapons so the suitors cannot fight back when he strikes. Odysseus’ plan allows for him to take back what he lost, showing that Book XVI, where Odysseus introduces his plan, should be in the subsection, “Nohbdy’s…

This caused the men not to be overpowered by the Sirens. Odysseus gave up his own safety to save his men's lives, showing a courageous act. Another example is, when odysseus and his men were trapped by the Cyclops, he devised a plan to free himself and the men. Odysseus put the plan into action because he, “... leaned on it [the spear] turning it as a shipwright turns a drill in planking,” blinding the Cyclops(316-318). Odysseus came up with this because he did not want to kill him, or his men would never escape. Therefore, his plan was to blind the cyclops by stabbing him in the eye. This effected the rest of the journey because again, he saved his men from death. Finally, he is courageous when he goes to kill the suitors for his wife. After he reveals himself to the suitors, Odysseus starts shooting arrows to kill them. Then he says to Telemachus, “when they are all gone if I’m alone, they can…

Not only does he push past these boundaries, he defies all odds set against him. In doing so, Odysseus must make sacrifices in order to overcome these obstacles, but through determination he prevails. Odysseus’s will to persevere is shown when he is met with a burdensome decision, for which he must choose in the end what will be the best path to continue on his journey. “And deathly pity ran me through at the sight-far the worst I ever suffered, questioning the passes of the strange sea. We rowed on” (Homer 823-825). Odysseus must face the sea creature Scylla and sacrifice some of his men, in order to progress with his travels. Lastly, a characteristic that proves Odysseus is a great hero is his sensitivity. He is often moved to tears, while he is a prisoner on the island with Calypso, he yearned to be home with wife Penelope and son Telemachus. Missing them gives him so much pain that Calypso would often notice Odysseus, "...sitting in his usual place on the stone, wearing out his soul with lamentation and tears." (). He reserves this sensitivity for the people closest to him that he trusts the most. His sensitivity reveals that he is human and humans can be sad when they are away from their…
