The Personal Memoirs of U.S. Grant is one of the two books that I selected off of the United States Army Chief of Staff Reading List to read. This book covers one of the most upended and delicate times in our countries long and eventful history. This book was written by former United States’ President and Army General Ulysses S. Grant and it covers the majority of his United States Army Career and military combat action in two major wars including the Mexican War and the United States Civil War.

He did not want to attend at first but was compelled to by his father. At the age of seventeen, Ulysses S. Grant reported to West Point Military Academy in May of 1839 and passed his entrance exams within the first two weeks. At West Point Military Academy, Ulysses S. Grant’s performance was average at every task except for equestrian/ cavalry skills, where he excelled. He never seriously considered staying in the military after he graduated. Grant experienced his first combat action under General Zachary Taylor during a deployment near Matamoros, Mexico. He was assigned in a fortification role as a quartermaster for this unit, but Ulysses S. Grant did experience more combat action during the assailment on Mexico City under General Winfield S. Scott later on. This was primarily due to him having to run ammunition back and forth between the front and rear lines. Ulysses S. Grant even played a minor role in the assailment, availing to capture a church belfry and used it as a location to direct and concentrate cannon fire directly into the enemy troops. By the close of the Mexican-American War, Ulysses S. Grant had risen to the rank of Captain.
In 1848, Ulysses S. Grant returned to St. Louis, Missouri and married Julia Dent after the Mexican-American War had ended. He decided to stay in the United States Army since his business skills were destitute and most ventures that he started failed. He and Julia spent several mostly jubilant years in Sackets Harbor, New York, and Detroit, Michigan during this time period. Ulysses S.
