Uncas and Magua have different traits and personalities. Uncas is quiet, reserved and speaks only when asked or spoken to, usually by his father. During the search for Cora and Alice, Hawkeye, fearing they have missed their way asks Uncas for his input. Uncas looks to his father for approval to speak and keeps silent till he “bade him speak” (Cooper ch. 21). Uncas constantly maintains a reticent manner except when in battle. These two fighters are valiant, strong and easy on the eyes. They both have native intelligence that aid them in being smart trackers. Uncas is a full-blooded Indian, fully aware of his habitat and its’ inhabitants along with all its sounds. A skill that helps him and his companions in anticipating and escaping attacks from their enemies. He aids Chingachgook and Hawkeye in trailing the Hurons and their captives and Hawkeye confesses to Heyward that they “might indeed, have lost trail, had it not been for Uncas” (Cooper ch. 12). Likewise, Magua’s native knowledge and tracking skills enables him to efficiently trail his enemies as well as avoid capture since he always covers his track.
