Eliza harry and george all reunite at a quaker settlement that helps them escape to Canada.
As this is going on, tom is on his way to mr haley’s plantation. As he is on the boat, another slaveowner, Augustine st clare, is on the boat with his daughter eva who falls overboard and tom jumps in to save her. To show his gratitude to tom, st clare buys him and takes him to his plantation
St clare is a very just and virtuous man who treats his slaves very fairly and his daughter is very friendly to them. Tom lives with them for years, and eva becomes very close with him and teaches him to be a very devout Christian and follow the ways of jesus. He then encourages her to escape, which she does. When she does, and tom refuses to tell legree where she went, legree has him beaten until he slowly dies. However, as he is dying, mr shelby’s son george comes to buy tom’s freedom from legree and is forced to watch him die as a martyr.
Meanwhile, cassy and her daughter are fleeing on a boat to Canada, where they run

In fact during the height of this social issue, Pres. Abraham Lincoln formally met Harriet Beecher Stowe and said, “ So you’re the small girl who caused this big commotion” as a…

Every picture speaks a thousand words; however, this picture speaks so many more. Uncle Toms Cabin written by Harriet Beecher Stowe, was crucial for equality of slaves. The piece of art is showing that African Americans can get along with white people, in this case a young white girl. The young white girl is influential to the picture for many reasons. To start off with, since it is a child, it shows that young generations can change the way the older generations act, in this case treating former slaves, and African Americans the same way they treat everyone. The art also became that much more sensitive to the public because if it was a middle age white man, most people viewing the picture would not care, or think it is the African Americans…

    Satire in Huck Finn

The journey taken by two people down a river, is rarely thought of as anything more than just an adventure. However, Mark Twain uses his novel, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn, to explore and poke fun of many problems facing American society. Huck, the main character, is considered an uneducated boy who is constantly under pressure to conform to the civilized aspects of society. Jim, who accompanies Huck, is a runaway slave seeking freedom from the world that has denied it to him for so long. In his novel, Twain uses satire to demonstrate many of civilizations problems. In the beginning of the story, Huck sneaks away from his home to play with Tom Sawyer and his friends. The boys start a gang and decide that one of the things they will do is kidnap people, and hold them for ransom. The boys quickly discover that they cannot ransom anyone because they don't know what ransom means. Tom has a theory as to the meaning of the word, But per'aps if we keep them till they're ransomed, it means that we keep them till they're dead.(12) Without any doubts, all of the boys agree with this meaning of the word. In this segment of the novel, Twain uses satire to demonstrate that even though something may be truly wrong, if civilization or society adopts it to be true, then it is believed to be true. Twain may be specifically using the issue of slavery as his target, in this instance of satire. During the time period in which The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn was written, religion was as much a part of civilization, as was an education. Religion is one of the key victims of Twain's satire throughout the novel. This satire is no more apparent then when Huck's guardian, the Widow Douglas, preaches to him about Moses. Huck didn't think very much of her lecture; Here she was a-bothering about Moses, which was no kin to her, and no use to anybody, being gone, you see...(3) Twain uses Huck to exhibit his objection to the blind faith that civilized society places towards religion.…

In the 1930’s, people of color are being treated inhumanely, and Tom is an excellent representative of this struggle. As a black man accused of raping a white woman in a southern town, he is already at a disadvantage, with no hope of emerging as a victor. Tom is dead the moment that Mayella Ewell, the white woman, opens her mouth (Lee 245). It does not matter that Tom is a hardworking man who has a family, because he is always faulted in the eyes of Maycomb because of his color. Atticus Finch, the lawyer for Tom, tells his children that it is sinful to kill a mockingbird (Lee 93). Tom is a mockingbird and therefore, his conviction is a genuine sin and it is not one based on factual evidence, but pure ignorance and…

His description is more of the plainer, humbler side of Jesus than the heavenly one Eva is described as. Tom is described as being “large, broad-chested” (Stowe 27) with an expression of “kindliness and benevolence” (Stowe 27). Furthermore, Tom, like Eva, offers spiritual guidance to the other slaves around him. He serves as a sort of “patriarch in religious matters” (Stowe 35) on Shelby’s plantation likening him to Jesus offering guidance to his disciples. Depicting Tom, a black slave, as a Christ figure serves to show the readers that slaves have souls and morals too; they’re not just heathens as others viewed them. This illustration of slaves also having souls and being Christians works to appeal to the white audience that slavery is an evil because it enslaves fellow Christians. Tom’s death contrasts with Eva because there is bloodshed as he is physically beaten and suffers at the hands of Legree. But like Eva’s, Tom’s self-sacrificing death leads to the freedom and salvation of others. Tom takes these beatings in order to keep Emmeline and Cassy safe and his death ultimately leads to their salvation from Legree. Also when master George finds Tom and watches the life fade out of him, he resolves at that moment “to drive out this curse of slavery” (Stowe 429), which leads to him freeing all the slaves on his plantation. The parallel between Tom’s sacrifice and Jesus’ evokes more of an emotion in a Christian audience because they understand the magnitude of that kind of…
