Despite many expression of society ‘Uncle Tom’s Cabin’ demonstrates racism through injustice of white people in society; accusing blacks of being dirty or by incriminating them. Harriet Beecher Stowe uses ‘Uncle Tom’s Cabin’ to help the slave workers in the south to the predicament in the north as an act of to abolish slavery. Stowe represents slaves pure and innocent beings and whites and slave owners as inhumane beings, to create a difference between pure slaves and to those who mistreat slaves. It is too much to treat people unfairly based on their skin color and to believe we are beyond race. I learnt that religion is something we can tolerate but never agree upon, as each faith has an ordained
assumption on how to act in a certain situation or how to think on certain things. However, religion can also cause uncertainty with the inconsistency of religion leading to people’s distorted views as to what people believe and what religion is about. Slavery in ‘Uncle Tom’s Cabin’ by Stowe brings out similar feelings. Stowe depicts different aspects of what Christianity is supposed to be. Many People believe religion are ways to escape hell but do not fully understand that religion is a practice of moral commitment. Miss Ophelia is the exemplification of people who tries to escape spiritual punishment. She shows signs of discrimination towards blacks. “I always had prejudice against negroes … and it’s a fact, I never could bear to have that child touch me; I didn’t think she knew it” (Stowe Pg.246).
Stowe uses innocence which connects to Christianity. In the bible, only pure lambs are used as offering to god to take away their sins. Innocence correlates to Christianity and is characterised to a little girl named Evangeline St. Clare who is devoted to her faith. Her charitable faith and kindness brings happiness to others and leads some to christ. “Its jest no use tryin’ ti keep Miss Eva here … She’s got the Lord’s mark on her forehead” (Stowe Pg.240) This indicates a fact that Stowe portrays Eva as a good Christian, determined to bring others to christ in an unbiased and loving way. That being the case, I believe that religion causes confusion which leads to different views and worldly arguments and provides people with moral values and provides us with purpose.
