Underage Ethical Dilemmas
With my home state, South Carolina, underage and unethical behaviors as such are commonly found. South Carolina provides a strict law on the use of alcoholic beverages and smoking with underage individuals. South Carolina’s prohibition on the underage drinking law takes after most states in that adolescent under 21 years old are restricted from having, consuming, or purchasing beer, wine, or liquor and those under 18 years of age are prohibited from tobacco products. With probable cause to believe that an individual is attempting or has consumes alcohol and the use of tobacco, legal action can occur. Even though this law may sound true to its word as being strictly enforced, it is not hard to get around with those who choose to make unethical decisions. For example, someone who is above the age of 18 or 21 may purchase those items for minors which will allows them to always be able to have them in their possession, knowing that it’s against the law or with an underage individual having a fake identical ID. When learning how to resolve ethical dilemmas, being able to communicate rationally for the reason of believing one decision seems right and another seems wrong is vital. When officers neglect to make the wisest decision, they lose the trust of society and the communities and disappoint the law enforcement's ability to work and complete its main goal. Being an ethical decision maker is important and as a leader, it is essential to understand that a lead role is part of establishing what is considered right and wrong, based actions and decisions. Ethical norms and principles have developed over time and across all different cultures (Shanks, 1997). Ethical issues in policing reach back to the early ages of law enforcement. The profession of policing plays a vital role in the rationale and motivation of how officers conduct themselves while on and off duty. This is a primary focus point of the society in which they work, due to the society’s level of trust and confidence in the officers to act accordingly and responsibly without any negative person vengeances or vendetta. As a result of the numerous negative encounters of officers interacting with the public, which has been mainstreamed by the media, there is a heightened sense of entitlement and false responsibility of citizens to report to higher authorities or the media when they do not get whatever it is that they want or receive the…

Ethical considerations could be a concern for law enforcement officers moving forward into the future. Officers obviously have a desire to be ethical and do their job with the utmost morale possible, however the dilemmas they face to catch criminals and remain as ethical as possible is difficult. Off duty behavior, brutality, and corruption are big concerns now and for the future. People who regulate the law often find themselves needing to bend or break the law. More often than not, their fellow law enforcement officers will treat them with a lighter punishment or give no punishment at all because of their association with the governing association (Writing, 2014)…

It will also include methods on how this transition can be successfully achieved. The discussion will also contain a self-assessment of my own leadership strengths and weakness, and suggest developmental approaches to improve my leadership skills. Being employed as a police officer brings a consistent standard of morals and a high degree of integrity within one self, whilst promoting these same characteristics of other police officers, the New South Wales Police Force (NSWPF) and the general public. When enforcing the law, for police officers not two situations they encounter are ever the same, even when examine a large number of situations over an extended period of time. The officers are usually in the position of having to make decisions on how to handle a specific matter alone, or with little additional advice and without immediate supervision. In many cases, officer’s discretion extends to interpreting the meaning of the statutory text. It becomes, therefore, impossible to enforce the law equally due to the wide interpretation that can be a particular law. This is the heart of police discretion.…

Originally, the United States drinking age was raised to 21 in order to primarily reduce highway fatalities, along with teen pregnancy, alcohol poisoning in youth, as well as a future that was thought to be taking a turn for alcoholism. But everyone knows that this has not stopped minors from any of these things, let alone drinking in itself. Although it is illegal for anyone under the age of 21 to purchase alcohol, it can still be done. “This law has been an abysmal failure. It hasn’t reduced or eliminated drinking. It has simply driven it underground, behind closed doors, into the most risky and least manageable of settings” (McCardell).…

    Police Discretion Essay

In modern day society, it is hard to predict police discretion due to the different levels of crimes. Crime is constantly evolving, and the rules and guidelines are not always enforcing properly. Therefore this creates a loop whole. A loop whole of this magnitude makes all those within the surrounding communities subject to being criminally exposed to mishaps. “The importance of discretion implemented by the police officers is having the ability to execute judgment opposed to following these set guidelines of policy and procedures (Bohm & Haley, (n.d).” When executing judgment, it requires analyzing or interpreting information for making an immediate decision. These decisions are often made spontaneously, and sometimes they require critical planning to execute the task. For example, when a swat team of officers is called out to a crime scene the negotiator is the one who does the critical planning for the real swat team. The team is made up of special weapons and tactics members that enforce hostile…

It is normal for most states to prohibit minors from purchasing and consuming alcohol, but the line between legal and illegal gets blurry when states have exceptions. Some states allow consumption by minors in the presence of family or spouses (source 1). Another exception is that some states allow minors to purchase alcohol to help law enforcement check merchant compliance; even though; normally it is a double offense if a minor purchases alcohol because they can be charged for both purchasing and possessing alcohol (source 1). These exceptions can be made because the states are given the power under the 21st amendment (source…
