Autism is very difficult for doctors to diagnose. A diagnosis of autism is usually made by the child's third year of life. An autistic child shows little to no affection. One idea is focused on the family structure of the child. It has been suggested to families of autistic children to try and have a separate and distant relationship with the child. These parents are called “emotional refrigerator" or "refrigerator mother" (Nevid et al., 1994). There is no evidence to support this theory. Although there is little evidence for the neurological theories concerning the cause of autism, there is some evidence that suggest it might be hereditary. Research studies in autism have found a variety of abnormalities in the brain structure and chemicals in the brain but it has not been proven. Again, there are many different cases involving autism therefore the treatment given to an individual may work for some not
