Understanding Diversity
Diversity, and how I understand it, is a little bit different from how most may understand it. Diversity runs much further than difference and its consequences are much more grave than mere variety. Diversity, at least in the way we discuss it, has transcended the very narrow and bland denotation it was originally given, to become a hotbed of social and economic analysis. Diversity and the processes it entails not only shapes who we are but also how we categorize ourselves. These formal process are as dynamic and noticable as they are frustrating and complicated, and it takes patience, curiosity, and courage to want to even delve into these topics. It is only through honest and direct engagement that we will learn anything from each other.

Diversity is defined in the dictionary as "the condition of being different." A crucial mistake many people make is to equate diversity with "race" and "culture". They think diversity is about "what Hispanics are like" or "what Europeans are like". “This approach is inherently flawed because it reinforces stereotypes and promotes an "us versus them" mentality. Diversity extends far beyond race and culture to include a number of dimensions of differences”. Loden and Rosener (1991). Valuing diversity recognizes differences between people and acknowledges that these differences are a valued asset. It also respects individuality while promoting respect for others.…
