The peer review is over Alex Wittrock’s Draft 1.1 “Perspectives on Barefoot Running versus Shod Running”. The thesis statement is, “When looking at the overwhelming evidence for and against barefoot running, many of the experts would agree that running without shoes is beneficial for injury prevention, while other experts disagree and argue the risks are too great attempting to run without shoes.” The purpose in the first paragraph is clear in that the author explains as to why the ideas of whether barefoot running is beneficial and presents both sides that will be discussed in the literature review. Moreover, the author furthers the understanding of the purpose within the first paragraph by clearly stating that research has been done on the…
Large metal poles would stand stories high hanging wires from pole to pole and back down to the ship. The poles stood in a post lintel structure with two main bars holding a top bar up. Down on the wasted ship floor was where the cargo was held for up to two years waiting to be disposed of…

This course focuses on the dynamic forces impacting Earth’s environment. It is a study of the major constructs in geology, oceanography, meteorology, and astronomy collectively called Earth science. A scientific approach will be used in orienting students to develop an understanding of the interconnectivity of each of these sciences.…
As a runner, I consistently suffer the “typical” pains in my knee, the arch of my foot, and my achilles tendon. I have tried pronation- fixing shoes for my knees, arch-supporting orthotics, and heel-cushioned shoes for my achilles. These superfluous attempts at eliminating pain only created more problems. Could these very things - cushioned, bulky shoes - designed to maximize running performance be hampering our running and causing excessive injuries? Many runners, professional and ametuer, have arrived at this conclusion and have begun running barefoot. Many believe that clunky, padded shoes make runners strike on the heel, which sends a massive shockwave of force up the leg and is absorbed by the knee and hip joints, which causes injury. Barefoot runners are more inclined to strike on the ball of the foot, which creates rotational energy of the foot and sends much less shock up the leg. Shoes…
On May 7th the Lusitania entered the Irish channel, sailing right past the coast of south Ireland (Unknown, OL). It was a foggy day, and captain of the ship, William Turner decided to turn slow the ship down to 15 knots because of it. At about 1:40 p.m the Germans U-boat launched a torpedo and it hit the right side of the ship (Unknown, OL). Moments later, another expulsion occurred, this one a mystery, and was said to have been the cause of the sinking. “Many believe the second explosion was caused by the ignition of ammunition hidden in the cargo hold. Others say that coal dust, kicked up when the torpedo hit, exploded” (Unknown, OL). The hidden cargo was unknown to the passengers aboard and held munitions and contraband intended for British war effort (Unknown, OL). “Within 18 minutes the giant ship slipped beneath the sea.” (Unknown, OL). By the end, there was a loss of…

In the first article, different people have come to Florida to find ship wrecks. The people have mostly found Spanish ship wrecks because the Spanish used to inhabit Florida. One person named Mel Fisher, didn't like idea of using a machine that would suck up all the sand on the bottom of the ocean, to find the shipwrecks. Instead, Mel Fisher would use a machine called the mailbox system. This would, instead of sucking up all the sand, would blow away the sand using the boat's engine. This worked more effectivly because Mel Fisher would find more shipwrecks and gold artifacts.…
Shifting baselines is a term used to describe or measure the change in a system keeping a reference point. This reference point is also known as a baseline which is usually taken from the past. The baseline can be any time period. It can be older than 50 years or 200 years from now depending on the situation and the availability of certain data, information and accurate statistics. “Shifting baselines are the chronic, slow, hard-to-notice changes in things, from the disappearance of birds and frogs in the countryside to the increased drive time from L. A. to San Diego. If your ideal weight used to be 60 kg and now it 's 72, your baseline as well as your waistline has shifted” (Olson, 2002). Shifting Baselines is a term that was put forward in 1995 by Daniel Pauly (Olson 2002) which refers to a moment in our lives when we become unaware of the changes that are taking place around us and we lose track of the past reference points. This theory of shifting baselines syndrome (SBS) is being applied in different parts of scientific research department since then, to try to find out what our world looked like in the past and how can we reshape it in the coming future. It is most commonly used by marine biologists who examine and observe the changes taking place under the oceans. The industrial pollution, human waste, overfishing and the environmental degradation are causing destructive changes to our oceans as there is evidence for disappearance of certain fish species like flatfish, black sea bass and also a huge reduction in the remaining ones. The dead coral reefs of Jamaica and sudden rise in the number of useless species like jellyfish and bacteria are enough to ensure that the ecosystems of our oceans are unhealthy. The problem is that when the new generation observes this nature for the first time, they think that it is normal without knowing the situation of the past. Mostly…
