Define Project 1. What are the characteristics of a project that separate them from everyday activities? A good project goal statement is -‐
S –specific,
M –measurable
A – agreed-‐upon
R – realistic
T – time-‐framed My project “Pallet ‘n recycling” is specific, because as the project name all ready is saying it involves recycling. It will include environment friendly using of timber and material in construction sites. Project “Pallet ‘n recycling” will re-‐use …show more content…
the material what’s been left behind or has been unused on the project site. My project will re-‐use the pallets, timber and rest of the material for quality-‐ designed furniture, also including re-‐using fabric. My project will reduce over using environment and Mother of Nature. Instead of using year after year new forest products, my project will reduce the needs of timber by saving nature and the bad using of it. Knowing the project environment friendly uses and quality designed furniture will satisfy customer. As we know city Perth population at the moment is 1.6 million, government is planning to grow the population in WA to 3 million people by building new houses, buildings and centres. Also there is every month at least dozens of projects what’s been re-‐build or re-‐decorated.
Individual citizens are also doing gardening job and re-‐building in the house
(including gate, roof and inside the house). After they’re finished the building/project/site there’s always many pallets, material and timber left behind or send to destruction.
It happens at least once a week. There are citizens throwing away their old furniture as well. If there is going to be a cheap
“conveyance service” what would pick up the leftover material or old-‐furniture once a week with one full track, than the material what would be resaved can be used for an other month. With that kind of activity we can make quality furniture for more than 100 happy customers. 2. What are the common constraints to any project and why are they called constraints? The common constraints to any project are communication, time, power, success, management, budget, value and specification. Every project has a goal and it helps to focusing to the goals and success. 3.What to do project life cycle add to the planning and execution of a project? …show more content…

Initiation involves starting up the project, by documenting a business case, feasibility study, terms of reference, appointing the team and setting up a Project
Office.
Planning involves setting out the roadmap for the project by creating the following plans: project plan, resource plan, financial plan, quality plan, acceptance plan and communications plan.
Execution involves building the deliverables and controlling the project delivery, scope, costs, quality, risks and issues.
Closure involves winding-‐down the project by releasing staff, handing over deliverables to the customer and completing a post implementation review.
These processes include managing time, cost, quality, change, risks, issues, suppliers, customers and communication.
4.Define strategic management and describe its relationship with project management? Strategic management involves the formulation and implementation of the major goals and initiatives taken by a company's top management on behalf of owners, based on consideration of resources and an assessment of the internal and external environments in which the organization competes. Strategy is defined as "the determination of the basic long-‐term goals of an enterprise, and the adoption of courses of action and the allocation of resources necessary for carrying out these goals."[9] Strategies are established to set direction, focus effort, define or clarify the organization, and provide consistency or guidance in response to the environment.
Strategic management involves the related concepts of strategic planning and strategic thinking. Strategic planning is analytical in nature and refers to formalized procedures to produce the data and analyses used as inputs for strategic thinking, which synthesizes the data resulting in the strategy. Strategic planning may also refer to control mechanisms used to implement the strategy once it is determined. In other words, strategic planning happens around the strategic thinking or strategy making activity.
Strategic management is often described as involving two major processes: formulation and implementation of strategy. While described sequentially below, in practice the two processes are iterative and each provides input for the other.
Project management takes one of the goals and manages costs, schedules and resources to give the desired result.
Strategic management wants its goals and project management helps it to get it.
5.What does the term “stakeholder” means? What role do stakeholders play in
Project management?
Stakeholder can be a person, group or organization that has interest or concern in an organization.
After planning a project will need to identify all the people who have been interest in my/he’s/hers/theirs/your project and the functions they will perform in relation to your project.
Identifying and managing your stakeholders correctly can make or break a project. Stakeholders can include any of the following: *the project sponsor, *management, employees and relevant personnel, *clients or customers, *funding bodies.
6.Why is the organization’s vision mission statement important to the scoping of a project?
An organization’s mission or vision statement is important to the scoping of a project as it keeps outlines to reason and strategy behind the projects requirements and aligns them. It helps maintain focus within the project team and its management and can be used as a motivational tool. It serves as a point
of reference as projects should be aligned with an organization’s mission, vision and values.

7.What do managing and leading involve? Are they the same thing? No, they’re not the same managing and leading aren’t the same thing.
Managers just don't go out and haphazardly perform their responsibilities. Good managers discover how to master five basic functions: planning, organizing, staffing, leading, and controlling. Leading involves motivating, communicating, guiding, and encouraging. It requires the manager to coach, assist, and problem solve with employees. 8.Why is concept stage important to the project’s success? Before a project starts the project manager must make sure the project goals, objectives, scope, risks, issues, budget, timescale and approach have been defined. This must be communicated to all the stakeholders to get their agreement. Any differences of opinion must be resolved before work starts. This is perhaps the most important stage of any project as it sets the terms of reference within which the project will be run. If this is not done well, the project will have a high probability of failure. The initiation stage is where the business case is declared, scope of the project decided and stakeholder expectations set.
Time spent on planning, refining the business case and communicating the expected benefits will help improve the probability of success. It is tempting to start work quickly, but a poor initiation stage often leads to problems and even failure. Planning-‐
The key to a successful project is in the planning. Creating a project plan is the first task you should do when undertaking any project. Often project planning is ignored in favor of getting on with the work. However, many people fail to realize the value of a project plan in saving time, money and for avoiding many other problems. 9.Distinguish between; hope creep, effort creep and scope creep? Hope creep involves sending misleading status reports about the project showing that the project is on time, on budget, and on schedule. Effort creep is when one of your team members makes a huge effort on a task that is nearly done, but cannot finish it. For example, a task is 80% done in one week, and the team member is working on the remaining 20% for several weeks, with no end in sight. This is very common in software projects, and the perfect remedy for effort creep is to assign the remainder of the task to someone else who has more experience in the particular area of the task. Scope creep in project management refers to uncontrolled changes or continuous growth in a project scope. This can occur when the scope of a project is not properly defined, documented, or controlled. It is generally considered harmful. If budget, resources, and schedule are increased along with the scope, the change is usually considered an acceptable addition to the project, and the term “scope creep” is not used. 10.Describe the term “risk” and “risk management”? A risk is the chance of something happening as a result of a hazard or threat, which will impact on your business activity or planned event.
Risk management is the process that is used to avoid, reduce or control risk. 11. What is the work break down structure (WBS)? What information does it capture? A work breakdown structure (WBS), in project work breakdown structure
(WBS), in project management and systems engineering, is a deliverable-‐ oriented decomposition of a project into smaller components.
A work breakdown structure element may be a product, data, service, or any combination thereof. A WBS also provides the necessary framework for detailed cost estimating and control along with providing guidance for schedule development and control
