Unferth In Beowulf
This page is important, because the reader is able to see how Beowulf easily has an answer for being called out be Unferth. Beowulf also is able to tell Hrothagar a tell of his heroic triumphs. The reader is also able to see how Beowulf believes his fate is already predetermined. Beowulf refuses to die by the sea-beast because then they would be able to bask in the glory. The sea-beast could not kill him because he refused to let them; win his pride means more than his life. Beowulf is confident to fight with or without weapons. When Beowulf says the sailors are safe from raids shows he believes he is able to defeat and safe anything. We get to see a different side of how the natives of Heorot feel about Beowulf’s arrival. Unferth is jealous

These people are Horthgar and the rest of the Danish people. Horthgar thankfully says to Beowulf “you have traveled here to favour us with help and fight for us” (line 457).The creature that creates this danger is called Grendel. Grendel is a monster that everyone feared to battle but Beowulf. When Beowulf knows that Grendel has enormous power, he prefers to battle and fulfill his loyalty than to escape safely.
