Dear Delegates,
Welcome to the UNHCR of the 4th Annual HighScope Model United Nations. I, Reyhanillo Yusuf Andikasim, am your Director for this conference. The Co-Directors for the UNHCR will be Angelina Sachi Adinda Allessandra Kondo and Wafina Mario. We have experience in multiple Model United Nations across Indonesia. Our hope is that we will be not only able to lead the committee, but to educate, befriend, and work together with you, the delegates, in order to create the best MUN simulation experience.
The topic that we will be discussing in the 2012 HighScope Model United Nations is the problem of the Lord’s Resistance Army (LRA), an armed group originating in Uganda that has spread throughout Central Africa and caused instability. Its leader is Joseph Kony, a notorious warlord. He is wanted by the International Criminal Court and is accused of various human rights violations such as kidnapping, rape, torture, and the use of child soldiers. This has resulted in thousands of refugees from the area. While the Lord’s Resistance Army is currently only a regional threat and is well below its peak strength, the organization has come under the international spotlight due to the release of a controversial short film named Kony 2012. Made by Invisible Children Inc. and released in March 2012, the video was released with the final goal of stopping Kony and the LRA by the end of this year.
While the deadline established by Kony 2012 is improbable, we hope that the delegates of this UNHCR committee will work cooperatively to find a solution on how to control the refugee situation in Uganda and central Africa that resulted in one of the world’s most wanted criminals and his organization. Furthermore, we would also like the delegates to bring into account the methods in which this crisis has become so well known across much of the world, and how “slacktivism” does or does not play a positive role.
We sincerely hope that all delegates
