Thomas Jefferson's presidency started with the Revolution of 1800, the first time political parties sent candidates and campaigned. He managed to stabilize and empower the people of the United States during his two terms as president. One of his major accomplishments was cleared the Revolutionary debt the US incurred. He did this by putting his frugal/simple economic plan into effect, reducing the navy to several ships and the army down to small militias. This was one of his 3 main goals at the start of his presidency that he accomplished. He also spent $15 million in acquiring the Louisiana Territory from a war-weary Napoleon Bonaparte. This doubled the size of the US Overnight and he went to work by sending expeditions westward and incorporating the people. This was important because previously, people had simply pushed past the boundary illegally or squatted, thus stabilizing the nation. Jefferson also nixed Adam's and Washington's monarchial lives by not using a horse-drawn carriage or being called "Majesty" and gave more power to the states. As a strict-constructionist, he believed all powers not given to the federal government belonged to the states. This was important because…

In 1643, there were four New England colonies who formed a confederation and they came up with the Articles of Confederation. In 1697, William Penn brought forth a plan of union which never was implemented. Last but not least in 1754, Benjamin Franklin came up with the Albany Plan of Union. “The history of colonial efforts to cooperate or unite demonstrates that the colonies had no strong or sustainable need for a common government.” All of those plans never went into effect but that doesn't mean that they didn't want to unite. In the following paragraphs I'm going to state why I think this statement is wrong by using documents A, B, and C.…
Manifest Destiny, or land stealing? The war against mexico and the us, which took place north of the Rio Grande, broke out May 1846. The land north of the Rio Grande was disputed by the US and Mexico. Because the United States decided to occupy disputed territory Mexico attacked. With that said, is the United States justified in declaring war against Mexico? The United States was not justified in going to war because they deprived Mexico from their land, occupying territory in dispute and it was mexico's territory.…
In the post-Civil War United States, many large corporations grew in size, number, and influence by exerting control over their economic sectors through monopolization, influencing key political decisions through their key monetary assets, which brought an era of poor economic stability and success for the American public.…
Imagine you’re freezing and starving, your friends are all sick and dying, and on top of all that, you’re in the middle of a war. In the winter of 1777 and 1778, this was how George Washington and his troops lived. They spent a long winter in blistering cold weather and lived in poorly built huts. We had no shoes, food, or supplies in general. If you were in this situation and you had served your enlistment time, would you re-enlist and go back to these conditions? I personally did not re-enlist because there were harsh conditions, people were getting sick and dying, and we had no support or supplies from congress.…
It was 1777. My comrades and I trudged through murky snow and grass on the way to winter camp in Valley Forge, PA. Lots of my fellow men were sick. There was no food and no supplies. General Washington was asking us to reenlist for another 9 months. I was confused. Should I reenlist or not? I reenlisted for another 9 months because my comrades were getting sick, of my loyalty to my government, and my belief in the cause.…
The misinterpretation and different views of what was stated in the Constitution contributed to the sectional discord, tension and failure of the Union. The Constitution was written almost a century before all these problems occurred, they could not have foreseen such issues back then. Although the Constitution was written very well for that time period, it does unfortunately contribute to the failing of the Union.…
By the 1850’s the Constitution, originally framed as an instrument of national unity, had become a source of sectional discord and tension and ultimately contributed to the failure of the union it has created. This was shown by interpretations of the constitution and other documents when the constitution was assorted together.…
When Missouri applied to become part of the union, they insisted on being a slave state. This upset the north due to their interest in a balance of power. The Missouri Compromise was enacted with the help of Henry Clay in order to come to a conclusion to the political arguments between the North and South. It stated that in order for Missouri to be accepted as a slave state, Maine would come into the union as a free state. Also, slavery wasn’t to be permitted north of latitude 36˚ 30’. The long retired Thomas Jefferson expressed his alarm to the happenings in American government by comparing the sectional disunity to a “fire bell in the night [that] awaked and filled me with terror.” (Document G) John Quincy Adams also stated that “If the union must be dissolved, slavery is precisely the question upon which it ought to break.” (Document F) By simply drawing a line to determine boundaries of slavery, it was inevitable that neither side would be completely satisfied in the long run.…
The summer internship I am looking to secure works with youth and young LGBT folks in the Springfield area called Out Now. As fellow LGBT person I would like to work with the only queer youth organization in Springfield Massachusetts. I would like to assist in providing a safe space for queer youth and their allies to learn about themselves, develop leadership skills, and explore the history of the LGBTQ movement. I hope to assist and continue their mission, and provide resources as a fellow community member and activists who has been fighting for LGBT rights on campus, and personally in my life educating my family about gender and identities.…
In September 1796, President George Washington published his Farewell Address to the people of the United States. Washington expressed his thoughts and advice on what he perceived to be the important considerations for the new American nation. He did not expect that his advice should dictate future American policies, but he hoped that Americans would be wary of the harmful impact of sectional and economic disunity, political parties, foreign influence, and the claims domestic power-seekers. Washington believed that the Constitution provided the most effective framework for the future operation of politics in America and the conduct of international relations.…
Washington stated that Unity was a “Real Independence.” In his words about Unity he talked about how all the Nation’s benefited from being together as one. Washington wanted us to have the same Religion and political beliefs.…
The Articles of Confederation were a great start to shaping and unifying our country, but it was just that, a “start”. It needed to take the country as a whole into consideration in order for it to hold this unity in place. The Articles of Confederation led to the Constitution of the United States. Although similar in some aspects, very different in others. The articles had many weaknesses that were changed in the Constitution. There were many compromises made between the states in order to effectively draft the Constitution. Roger Sherman’s Plan kept the Constitutional Convention together which was later known as the Great Compromise. The fight for the Constitution had just begun and the ratification processes needed to take place. Even with some states being in favor of the Constitution it would take time to get the nine states needed to complete this process. The states in favor would called themselves The Federalist and those opposed were called the Anti-Federalist. The Federalist set out to change the mind of the remaining states with a series of letters that were written to newspapers.…
The Constitution of The United States of America was intended to be a source of national unity; however it never fully clarified the issue of slavery. By the 1850’s there were many different interpretations of the Constitution that led to much social discord within the country. Much of this social discord came from different opinions of whether the Constitution promoted unity or ultimately would lead to secession. Constitutional add-ons such as the 3/5 Compromise and popular sovereignty were used to promote unity, while events such as the Compromise of 1850, the Kansas- Nebraska Act and poor leadership from Presidents Millard Fillmore, Franklin Pierce and James Buchanan led to secession in 1861.…
