The tanning industry makes their money from a service that reportedly could be hazardous to the consumer (Huber, 2012). This product is tanning beds that use ultra violet (UV) light to help their consumers become tan and produce vitamin D. The ethical dilemma arises from evidence that UV exposure may cause some types of cancer. Despite these possible hazards the industry continues to claim healthy benefits from using their service. The tanning industry accuses dermatologist and other agencies of either lying, getting paid from other companies, or lacking enough evidence to prove that their service is causative. The industry is also training their employees on what they can say when they are at work and what to tell their friends and family when they are off the clock. They are using their employees as a form of advertisement. They propagate doubt in the minds of possible customers about the possible risks of using tanning beds. The tanning industry appears to be unconcerned that their product could be harming their customers.…
This is a study done to examine the cognitive rationalization amongst undergraduate students that either use tanning beds or used to use tanning beds. Despite the rising skin cancer rates and the direct correlation between indoor tanning and melanoma, tanning beds are still a popular cosmetic tool amongst young adults. Cognitive dissonance can assist in explaining the role in cognitive rationalizations. Cognitive dissonance occurs when an individual has to conflicting beliefs or behaviors. An example of this that is applicable to this topic would be when someone knows that tanning may cause them to have skin cancer.…
This month, Women’s Health magazine presented an ad for the popular Aveeno lotion and body wash. Aveeno’s primary goal is to persuade its audience that Aveeno is the healthy choice and will cause you to have more beautiful skin. Jenifer Aniston is flawlessly sitting on a white couch, with a beige background. At the top of ad, there is an Aveeno logo and right below it says “Naturally Beautiful Results”. At the bottom of the ad, a bottle of Aveeno body wash and lotion is pictured right beside the words “Healthy skin equals beautiful skin”. Women’s Health magazine is designed to provide health and beauty…
The efficacy of sunscreen is important because it blocks potentially harmful UV light, which may be a primary factor in skin cancer. Different levels of sun screen were tested alongside lotion and no treatment to see how well they protected Escherichia coli strain K-12 (Ecoli K-12) from UV light. The group that was treated with the strongest level of sunscreen had the highest average percent survival of any group. This would support the idea that higher level protectant sunscreen does in fact provide more protection from potentially harmful UV light.…
Hundreds of years ago determining the outcome of an event or situation was somewhat easier than it is in our present day society. As our world and time evolved so did the people which inhabit it. Going from Point A to Point B is very rarely a straight line anymore, the path is often filled with twists and turns that could end up leading to a point you never saw coming. In psychology especially lies a wide range of topics and concepts that can lead to inaccurate perceptions, cognitions, and conclusions of certain situations. Ideas such as the afterimage effect, availability heuristic, ethnocentrism, groupthink, the lack of object permanence, non-random assignment of research participants, optimistic explanatory style, and proactive interference are all subjects that tend to skew one’s original perspective or path.…
Implicit biases are particularly relevant to the law enforcement decision-making process because they link certain groups with traits related to crime and violence. For example, stereotypes linking African American adolescents to aggression suggest that people precieve behavior by an African American youth as more aggressive than behavior similarily displayed with white adolescents, in addition to violence, danger and hostility [citation-Duncan 1976]. These same stereotypes indicate an aspect of criminality, which is particularily important when assessing whether a suspect poses a threat to personal safety. Furthermore, research suggests that the race of an adolecent will influence these perceptions of threat [citation-Devine 1995]. As first point of contact, law enforcement…

recommended the moisturizing lotion above all other choices and how they worded the claim on the bottle, the reader cannot determine how many dermatologists recommended that individual product. The statement says it uses the word dermatologist instead of using Dermatologists which means more than one. So in this case it only says that one dermatologist recommended the product to be number one. It also does not tell us what this dermatologist is basing his findings on. It does not mention all the other products they tested this lotion against. Were the dermatologist used in the testing familiar with all the lotions available and tested this particular lotion against the most well-known for skin problems? Plus the lotion company is paying that dermatologist to make that statement so there is now a conflict of interest. There is no verification of the claim that is being made on the bottle. Also it does not tell us what the number 1 stands for. This means the number one could stand for the lowest or highest price lotion recommended, the.…
This article talks about the purpose, responsibilities, and works of the Cosmetic Ingredient Review (CIR), as well as its ties to the FDA and the Consumer Federation of America (CFA). The CIR uses clinical and experimental data to conduct independent and expert reviews of the ingredients in cosmetics and determine if they are to be considered safe for use. The panel studies and reviews the toxicity of the chemicals used as well as their acidity and their possible effects on constant human used. The CIR often re-reviews previously used chemicals such as sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) and studies how it is used to keep up with the ever evolving market. The expert panel did extensive research of the possible cancer risk of SLS and found that SLS…
False assumptions are made by children while transitioning to adulthood. From these false accusations, we learn what is actually going around and fix our mistakes. Likewise, in the various short stories: “Sea Urchin,” by Chang-rae Lee, “The Nothingness Forest,” by Margareta Ekström, and “Games at Twilight,” by Anita Desai, express the obstacles and morals from childhood. Throughout these stories, the authors try to explicitly explain childhood experience by going through a young or older child’s thoughts. Many of the children are trying something new because they believe they will get something good out of it. Throughout the short stories the authors illustrate that children make false assumptions in order to understand…

Marketers are often criticized for exaggerating the benefits offered by their products. This is especially the case with the part of marketing that engages in customer communication, such as advertising and sales people. The most serious problems arise when product claims are seen as misleading customers into believing a product can offer a certain level of value that, in fact, it cannot. E.g. the way lotion are made to portray light skinned people as if when a customer purchases lotion and apply to their skin they will also look like that.…
In business, companies such as Johnson and Johnson, Coco Cola and Pharma Pharmaceuticals all depend on chemistry and it is vital for such businesses to be precise, as to reduce errors and prevent injuries or even death, as all three of these businesses, while different are dealing with chemicals that are either ingested or interact with the body in some form and could cause serious problems if not calculated correctly. In one recent article done by CBS just this year, it was reported that Johnson and Johnson was planning on eliminating carcinogen formaldehyde from there famous “no tears shampoo.” The company’s reason was that the product had the potential to cause cancer and this goes the same for the other companies, as a slip in accuracy and precision in calculating too much of one ingredient could cause serious illnesses and result in lawsuits that could drive a company out of business over time if they did not correct the problem.…
