The treatment for a person that is homeless and uninsured and mentally ill is appalling. They are treated indifferent in society. From the eyes of African American man in Louisiana; I seen them been rejected talked about. This is from doctors to the nurses to the staff. I seen people looked over and curse out and even kicked out of facilities for the way they look or acted. I also seen hospital with beds available and tell certain people no beds were available. I think there should be more training for medical staff and a bigger pay raise for them. Especially the medical staff that is willing to work and help the mentally ill patient. At many police scene mentally ill people and homeless are detained and taken to hospital or arrested or taken to jail. The biggest system in Louisiana for the mentally ill is the correctional facility which has become the primary way to deal with the mentally ill because of budget cutbacks. The correctional facility are acting as holding areas like hospitals for the mentally ill. And even if they are not taken to jail the mentally facility offers little help to the mentally ill person. Because the funding for inpatient treatment options has dramatically have decreased. This then turns to a vicious cycle that repeats over and over for a mentally ill person or a homeless person. I think there should more training for law enforcement and better pay and on the job training for the mentally ill and how to deal with them in society and various places. In addition to on the job training there should be extra incentives to officer that treat and talk to the mentally ill and resolve the situations instead
