Unit 024 Promote Child Development
Unit 024 Promote Child and Young Person Development

Outcome 1 Be able to assess the development needs of children or young people and prepare a development plan

Assessment Criteria
The learner can:
1. Explain the factors that need to be taken into account when assessing development

When assessing a child/young person we must be careful to take in to account confidentiality before carrying out any observations. Within my setting, we have an Welcome pack (aka Induction Pack) with lots of forms for the parents to sign which gives us permission to observe them and the child/children with in the assessment centre. All of the confidential material surrounding the parents and children are locked away in a secure cabinet in the office so no unauthorised access

For example, we had a family with a toddler and baby and during the night when mum fed the baby we were present in the room, but often having this person in the room woke the toddler and caused him unnecessary upset so instead watched intensely via the CCTV. When we assess a child we must take account of their ethnic, cultural and linguistic backgrounds as these can play an important role in how the child acts and the understanding of the words being used. Disability or specific requirements need to be taken in to account when carrying out any assessment/observation of a child can be underestimated and the observations will be unreliable. In my setting we receive all the information of each family from the Local Authority who have referred them to us, its vital we receive relevant and up to date information so we know exactly what the concerns are and get an accurate picture of the Childs development, if this information was incorrect it could harm the child’s development. Avoiding bias is important in my role, we must remain completely objective, we are not here to judge our families, we observe and document facts of every aspect of their day to day lives they live out

However I was able to communicate through the room leader. To ask permission to observe the child I spoke to the room leader and explain in detail everything I would do and gave them a signature signing sheet so that they were able to ask the parent for permission and ask for them to sign the permission slip. I organised each of my observation’s be checking the outcomes for the child’s development for their age using the EYFS development matters. This was so I would know what I need to be writing about for example there is no need to write that a child used a pincer grip holding a toy hand bag if I am observing there social skills! I kept organised by also drawing out my rough tables for time sample and checklist before hand to make sure I wasn’t drawing it out during the observation. My observation lasted from September to January, I wish it could have been longer because I believe it could have been interesting to see how Child A develops over a 6 month period but unfortunately I had to move into my final…

1.1. When assessing development some factors need to be taken into account one of these is confidentiality, this means that you will need permission from a child’s parents/carers before doing observations, also when information is wrote down about a child is important that it is kept in a safe place were only the relevant people can access it. Also making sure that information about a child is only shared with parents/carers or colleagues and professionals that have the right to know. Another factor to take into account is a child’s wishes and feelings, this means to take into account the child’s wishes when doing an observation or assessment. The child may not want to be assessed at that moment in time it is important that the child feels happy with been observed. Also think about how you write about a child make sure it is respectful towards the child. Also when assessing development Ethnic, linguistic and cultural background needs to be taken into account as a child’s behaviour, development and skills can sometimes depend on their culture, ethnic and linguistic background. A child’s linguistic background is very important as the child may not understand what the task is as the words used are unfamiliar to that child. When assessing a child it is also important to take into account their ability and if they have any specific requirements, Some children may have a disability like dyslexia or may have a physical disability like need a wheel chair, this should be taken into account as a child may need extra time to achieve their goals or may need a one to one with a practitioner in order for their development to progress. Another important thing to take into account when assessing a child is the information you have and making sure it is reliable. This is very important because if information is incorrect it can harm a child’s development. Also avoiding being bias is important if a child’s development is to be…
