Unit 1 Assignment 1: Installing Server Roles with a Batch File

Questions:

1. What does the /w switch do? Why is it used?
2. What switch is used to remove a role?
3. What is the command to start the DHCP Server service?
4. What command is used to configure a DNS zone?

The /w switch does some pretty cool stuff? The cool stuff it does is Specifies the warning level, an integer in the range 0 through 4. There is no space between the /W switch and the digit indicating the warning-level value. In the Roles Summary or Features Summary areas of the Server Manager main window, click either Remove Roles or Remove Features, depending on the software that you want to remove. Follow the instructions that are provided by the wizard as you progress through the removal. Open DHCP. In the console tree, click the applicable DHCP server.
Where? DHCP/applicable DHCP server On the Action menu, point to All Tasks and then click one of the following: To start the service, click Start. To stop the service, click Stop. To interrupt the service, click Pause. To stop and then automatically restart the service, click Restart. Open DNS Manager. If necessary, add the applicable server to the snap-in, and then connect to it. In the console tree, click the applicable DNS server. Where? DNS/DNS server On the Action menu, clicks Configure a DNS Server. Follow the instructions in the Configure a DNS Server Wizard. Hope this helped you out thank you for reading.

Check the workstations using ipconfig /all and find out if the ip range is within the address range you assigned, if it is a different address then the workstation failed to contact the DHCP server and has gone into apipa mode. The Network Interface Card might be assigned an incorrect driver. Another possible cause of the problem is that the patch cable is not plugged into the Network Interface Card, or is not connected to a switch on the other end. However, it could be that the server has run out of IP addresses that it can assign to clients. You can easily tell if this is the problem by comparing the size of the DHCP address scope to the number of devices on your network that request IP addresses from the DHCP server. But since only some of the workstations have got addresses the problem might be the DHCP server. Start off by doing some ping tests to verify that the DHCP server is able to communicate across the network. If the DHCP server is able to communicate with other computers on the network, then I recommend verifying that the DHCP server has an IP address that is compatible with the scope that the server is configured to assign addresses from. The server itself has to be assigned a static address in the same subnet range, such as 192.168.0.199. If this still doesn’t solve the problem make sure that the DHCP server is still authorized by the Active Directory to lease IP addresses. You should also check to verify that the scope is active, and that the necessary services are running on the DHCP server.…

Yes, it is worth setting up DHCP for two, five, or even twenty five computers as long as the computer has a newer operating system to support it. Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol is an important protocol that lets network administrators manage centrally and automate the assignment of IP configurations on a computer network. The way DHCP works is that the DHCP server receives the request, assigns a new address for a specific time period and sends it to the client. I think setting up DHCP for your computers is worth doing because it has its advantages over manual configuration. These advantages include that each computer gets its configuration from a "pool" of available numbers automatically for a specific time period meaning no wasted numbers. Domain Name System (DNS) A hierarchical distributed naming system for computers, services, or any resource connected to the Internet or a private network. It associates various information with domain names assigned to each of the participating entities. Most prominently, it translates easily memorized domain names to the numerical IP addresses needed for the purpose of locating computer services and devices worldwide.…
