How can communication affect relationships in the work setting?
Effective communication is essential as it ensures that the information we are giving and receiving is clear, accurate, non-judgmental, relevant and informative. This reduces the risks of mistakes being made and ensuring appropriate support service delivery. It is vital to work as a team so that you all work to achieve the same outcomes and targets, also to plan towards and ultimately meet their needs. This would ensure we work effectively with service users, their families and other people directly involved in their care. Communication and good relationships go hand in hand, therefor support workers who display good communication skills are more likely to be able to build relationships. Relationships can be influenced by body language, facial expressions, gestures and other methods or aids in which others listen and talk to you.

Describe the factors to consider when promoting effective communication.
There are several factors that need to be considered in order to promote effective communication:
Consider barriers present when attempting to communicate.
Interruptions and an unsuitable environment would make it difficult to communicate effectively, therefor taking the service user to a more private area would overcome this
Closed questions could make it difficult for conversation to flow, i.e. How old are you? Open questions should be used to encourage conversation, i.e. so how do you see your future?
Language barriers can be overcome by using translators or the service user’s
