Unit 1 Exercise 1: Local Exchange

Online gaming requires a network relay comprised of two components: on the company’s side, various computers take the roles of servers, and other computers (on the player’s side) work as clients. Clients are connected to the servers through the internet and thus a connection is maintained.
When playing an MMORPG such as FFXI, FFXIV, or Aion, (or even any other online games which allow online interactions with other players) servers owned by companies essentially facilitate every action performed by each player. Any action, be it movement, shooting, using an ability or even emoting is checked and reported back as a “state of the world” message.

The purpose of a Network is to share data. To make this possible, you have to be able to connect to other computers. For example, Cisco is a company who has made billions by allowing different groups of networks to share data across what we call the internet. Games take advantage of this technology to connect to other computers. Networking companies have succeeded so well in allowing people to connect across their internal networks and the internet that pretty much any application is able to send data to another…

VPNs may also be appropriate in an academic setting. Although most dorms are networked, universities employ stringent firewall rules to restrict students from using their computers as a server to the outside world. The Internet control message protocol (ICMP) packets and other types of control packets are disabled on student-used networks. It appears the only way to do gaming is through a website or through VPNs to avoid affecting the servers/configuration/ports and data flow. A VPN can go in front of a firewall or behind it. For example, a VPN router/switch can go in front of the firewall on a…

In more ways than ever thought possible, we now have information and personal communication literally at our fingertips. The technology has become so evolved and integrated into every area of our lives that most people are not even aware of their lifestyle's significant reliance on computer networks. This document will cover the history, workings, and modern day implementations of computer networks and the most common data communication protocols they utilize.…
