When working in care hear are a few points you should be aware of when dealing with service users:
Show respect, Treat people as individuals, be aware of discrimination, Personal information to be kept confidential, don’t judge or make assumptions, to provide reliable service,
Show what guidance and standards come from these principles and values.
Here is a list of government bodies who decide on how service users are treated:
General Social Care Council Codes of Practice (Health professional Council).
Nursing and Midwifery Code of Practice.
Nursery Education Code of Practice.
Care Quality Commission (CQC).
Outline why people who access services should be valued as individuals.
Service users should be treated as individuals because:
This will promote their individuality, not making them conform to the service
Service user led
Shows respect and understanding
If someone feels valued they are more likely to want to be part of the process.
Promotes individual being involved in decision making
Give examples of ways to value adults who access services.
By using their name of choice, Explain actions you need to take and why, Listen to how the person feels, If there are limits to what you can do or offer explain this, Support them to make the decisions, Provide information in a way the individual can understand.
Give examples of ways to value children and young people who access services.
Listen to their point of view, be honest with them about what is available, and Support them to make safe decisions, Use child appropriate language, and provide written information in a way they will understand.
Show what is meant by ‘person-centred practice’ or ‘child-centred practice.
Make sure that you are focused on the individual not just the service
Support or care planning should be completed with the individual so as you gain a good understanding of their needs and wishes
Review with the individual is the service meeting their needs
Keep the individual in control, empower them to make decisions
Use appropriate language and communication methods
Who does the individual want involved in the process?
Explain what ‘confidentiality’ means in terms of adults’ and children’s social care.
Personal information should not be shared without permission
This includes written records, records held on a computer and spoken information
Legal responsibility unless individual is at risk of danger, harm and abuse
Information can be shared with other health professionals (need to know)
Show how confidentiality helps to promote respect and values individuals.
Helps build working relationships
Builds trust
