The site visits for the unit 2 assignment started whilst general civil works were taken place, this involve foundation works for tanks, buildings, turbine rooms, paving and culverts for underground piping, etc. There were various types of work activities that range from Shallow to Deep foundations. Refer to photos in appendix 1 for further clarification.
Soil Investigation: Prior to any foundation design or excavation work to take place, soil Geotechnical Investigation using process is carried out by a competent contractor, this to explore the surface and subsurface of each foundation. A CME-45B Truck Mounted Auger Drill is used retrieve soil samples, all samples are tested in an off-site laboratory. The truck operators are usually exposed to various types of …show more content…
There are many considerations taking into account before and during excavation e.g. soil classification, equipment needed, weather, sloping and benching, also protective systems such as shoring, etc. Various tools and equipment are used for excavation e.g. Pick axe, Jack Hammer and Shovel as manual hand tool, etc. In the other hand, different size and capacity equipment are deployed in site e.g. Backacter, trenching machine, Multi-purpose Excavators, Dumpers, Dozers. In most cases, excavation creates dust of which affects the workers and equipment operators. Fig 3. A Sample of the excavation machines
Rebar Work: is used to reinforce the foundations, its sizes, configuration and installation is carried out in accordance with architect technical design. The main components of rebar are steel bars, offset bends, stirrups, hairpins, dowels, corner bars, etc. This task involves lots of manual handling whilst moving the steel bars, long sitting or standing in awkward body position and repetitive hand movement in teams of wires snap tying and using hand pliers.
