The colors of grey, black, and white in thisthese collage of images adds to the icy mood in these stanzas. The “late blizzard” represents, rather symbolizes, the father, unwanted and unwelcomed in its wake, yet, always storming through the door. It can be said that he ishe’s affecting everything with fake words, promises, and excuses, that are clearly nothing, but trash and lies. The line creates an image of garage all over the table, rather than poems, which effectively symbolizes the child’s mistrust of their father’s words.

The words show to the reader that the man inmain the house is unwanted for causing havoc and spitting out lies, just as the weather described in the statement. These images show the father’s deception and the way is presence in the home (storming, cold, unpleasant).

Specific Images and Symbols

To be specific, the image with the door and lock depicts an old door which is slightly out of its frame with lock broken. This shows the father’s arrival disturbed the paceplace and broken down the protectorprotection barrier that the family could’ve had against this unwelcome

I heard pa tell ma how much he loved loved loved her. I saw his fist, fall so gracefully against her cheek, she swooned…”

These lines focus on the deceit found in the relationship. The repetition of loved makes it sound like pa’s plea to ma. This gives the readers an image of how the deceitful man may sound when he is lying or controlling his family or wife. This repetition creates a lot of emphasis. There is also somewhat of an irony created with the use of “gracefully;” this is not usually a word that describes violence – but the use of it in this case creates an image of the father easily committing these violent effects, without even second thought.

Thus, it was important to pair contrasting pictures of a couple in love and in an argument, in order to show the struggle of parents found in the relationship. The contrasting images also depict the reality in what was actually happening in the broken relationship, compared to the image of how the poet romanticized it. The images are found in front of a dark background that adds to the atmosphere of the collage and poem.

    In the poem, "Storm Warnings" the organization is very important to the fluency of the poem. In the very first line the reader starts to get a feeling of the literal meaning of the work. In saying, "The glass has been falling all the afternoon" one learns that a barometer is falling, hence bad weather is on its way. The allegory, symbolic representation, that "glass" is a barometer is because later in the poem, the words "instruments and weatherglasses" are used. The poets tone, the general atmosphere is dim and gloomy but one gets the feeling that the poem isn't about the storm but living through it. In the first stanza the reader understands that a storm is approaching, "gray unrest is moving across the land" and windows are boarded up to protect them from the forthcoming conditions. As the reader moves toward the second stanza, they understand that the storm is going to come as it has in the past, regardless of its prediction, but the metaphorical meaning starts to emerge. Time is cyclical as is the weather. In the third stanza the reader gets the impression that even if a storm or foul weather is predicted, one can only prepare for it, they can't change it. "The wind will rise, We can only close the shutters." Basically the storm will come and there is nothing anyone can do except plan for it. In the final stanza it appears that they have prepared for the storm; the windows have been shut, the curtains drawn, and the candles lit. "These are the things that we have learned to do Who live in troubled regions." In the last two lines of the poem, one understands that people have to adjust the way they live, especially in times of trouble.…

    The male persona discovers the child’ death at the beginning of the poem which symbolises catalyses the ‘death’ of a couples marriage. This is supported by, “no, from the time when one is sick to death, … and things they understand”. The cynical tone of this phrase exemplifies the conflict of understanding as their method of expressing grief is different to one another.     The poem starts by using a depressing and somber tone from the overly dramatic perspective of a young boy. The poem is told by an omniscient outside perspective. The poet starts by describing the outdoor aspect of the snowman’s situation as being a lonely and terrifying experience, as seen in lines three and four of the first stanza. “The small boy weeps to hear the wind prepare/ A night of gnashings and enormous moan.” (Clugston, 2010). It is apparent that, to this boy, this is a huge frightening storm blowing in and threatening his poor snowman. Furthermore, the use of personification and metaphors are used to describe the prediction of the storm’s violent behavior as gnashing and moaning, both are which human qualities that can sometimes express pain and anger. Specifically, gnashing paints this image of something being grinded up through extreme impact, almost like a tornado’s behavior. The poem then gives a description of the snowman’s facial expression as seen by the young boy, showing a desperation and betrayal as compared to the biblical story of a God-forsaken Adam looking into Eden for the last time. This gives the poem a touching depth to the fear that the boy grasps and represents the emotional transfer to the snowman in the boy’s mind.…

    The meter and stressed syllables of the poem create a very distinct sing-song-like quality as the rhythm and rhyme copy that of a child’s nursery rhyme. The stress on the last line of the first and last stanza on this already extremely loud and intense poem (due to syntax) is an unnecessary loop that brings the reader back to the topic.
