Abstract
The author, Barrett Seaman, makes quite a few valid points when discussing the culture of binge drink in and around universities. He allows the reader to actually remove the focus off of the subject while highlighting the other factors that go along with binge drink, such as underage drinking. He makes valid points that are worth researching more into. I will review his points with more detail.
Unit 2 Major Assignment 2 The title of the article is “How Bingeing Become the New College Sport”. The authors of this article is Barrett Seaman, published in Time magazine in August 23, 2005 issue. My pre-conceived notions on the premise of this article were that it would be glorifying binge drinking and other partying escapades that occur on colleges/university campuses.
Analyzation of Seaman article In Seaman’s article about binge drinking, his topic seems to be more about underage drinking then actually the act of binge drinking. His claim is more about the need to change the drinking age in America back to 18. He put forth a view that this would prevent drinking in private verse drinking at a public place thus reducing bingeing. I tend to agree on the view of Seaman. I know during my first year of college, many people as well as I went to parties. At these parties drinking was definitely a stable, everyone was concerned how and if there would be alcohol at the party. That was pretty much the deciding factor on which party to attend. Party goers often binged and many were injured due to the over indulgence. If the drinking age was placed back at 18 instead of 21, then I feel people would not feel it is a “forbidden fruit” and in return decrease the curiosity of
