P1: Explain concepts of nutritional health.
Introduction:
For this assignment, I am to write on the basic nutritional terms and concepts with reference to Marian’s case study.
First, Marian will start by explaining briefly the major terms used in nutritional health which are:
Food:
Food is anything solid or liquid if when eaten, assimilated and absorbed by the body, provides energy, nourishes the body and supports life. Example: fish and chips, rice and juices. http://esltogo.files.wordpress.com/2010/05/food-photo.jpg
Diet:
This is a regular course of eating and drinking adopted by a person and does not include diet therapy or specific diet prescribed for treatment of a disease. In simple term, diet simply means the kind of food a person eats or drinks always under normal circumstances. http://www.rhnow.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/01/okinawa_diet_food_pyramid11.jpg
Nutrients:
They are the specific chemical constituents of food that provides energy or support growth, repair worn out tissues and aid normal functioning of the body (Stretch and Whitehouse, 2010). Examples: protein, carbohydrate, vitamins, water, fats and oil.
Malnutrition:
This is when the body does not get enough nutrients to function properly. It can be under-nutrition or over-nutrition. Under nutrition is a deficiency in nutrients resulting from poor diet or failure of the body to absorb the body nutrients and put them to use resulting from medical conditions such as ulcerative colitis (here food passes too fast through the digestive tract, preventing the nutrients from being absorbed into the blood stream). Over nutrition: this is a form of malnutrition in which nutrients are oversupplied relative to the
