Outcome 1 Understand why effective communication is important in adult social care settings
1.1.1.1.1 People communicate for a variety of different reasons. These can be to express our desires and wishes or express our emotions. A baby screaming could be communicating its hunger or pain. We also communicate to survive, to form relationships, socially interact and to share ideas.
1.2 Communication can affect relationships in a variety of ways. Good communication can encourage participation and help to create equality between people. Having good communication will help to build relationships/friendships and promote independence. Inadequate communication can have an opposite effect and a person could feel isolated and misunderstood. This could lead to negative emotion and frustration and seriously inhibit a person’s life. Communicating effectively enables a person to convey a variety of needs and emotions for example if they are in pain, hungry/thirsty or too hot or cold.
Outcome2 Understand how to meet the communication and language needs, wishes and preferences of an individual
2.1 Ways to establish communication and language needs, wishes and preferences would be to read the persons care plan or communication book. Introduce yourself and talk directly with them. Spend time with the person and observe them in relaxed surroundings. You could also gather information from people who know them well such as friends, relatives or health care professionals.
2.2 Factors to consider when promoting effective communication are what the person’s preferences and needs are. What their beliefs, values and what culture they come from. The environment is important as for example somewhere too noisy may drown out someone who is softly spoken or may be over stimulating. Make sure the person is involved in a way that is appropriate to them. Do they require a communication aid?
