M2: Assess the effectiveness of organisations in improving the environment.
In this task i will be assessing the effectiveness of the greenpeace organisation in improving the environment.
Over the years Greenpeace has targeted some of the worlds largest drivers of deforestation such as the palm oil industry in Indonesia and Malaysia, also the soy and casttle industries in the Brazilian Amazon. These are a prime example of successful Greenpeace campaigns. For example;
In 2006 the Greenpeace launched campaigns targetting the amazon soy industry, they targetted animal feed which is used to fatten chickens mostly used by fast food companies such as McDonalds. They spend a while tracking soy as it moved from farms in the amazon across the Atlantic to facilites in Britian. This sparked up immediate response from McDonalds demanding its supplier to provide them with deforestation free soy, shortly after because of their current dilemma they agreed to a ban soy grown on newly deforested lands which has changed the way products are produced in the Amazon. Due to this the ban has been extended yearly and through monitoring which has been constantly improving, this has all shown to be effective in reducing soy production.
With palm oil the process has been slower however the impact has been significant. In 2008 the Greenpeace released a string of reports liking to the deforestation in Malaysia and Indonesia to a variety of consumer products such as Unilever, Nestle and Cadbury. In many of these reports they highlighted the role consumers are playing in the destruction of forest habitats by simply purchasing the products from these unsuitable sources. As a result all three companies displayed new palm oil sourcing policies.
In 2009 the Greenpeace made a report on cattle ranching in the brazilian Amazon, this was their biggest success. Known as the biggest driver of deforestation in the Brazilian Amazon cattle ranching since 2006 more than
