D2 – Advantage: You pick up all the detail.
Disadvantage: It takes too much time.
Reading
P5 – Barriers to effective reading can be your surroundings and distractions. Written work may be in different language. Barrier can also be that they have messy writing. Dyslexia may be a barrier to effective reading. Visual impairment is a barrier to effective reading.
M3 – In the police force if a witness has dyslexia someone else can read it for them.
Writing
Letters
P5 – The structure and format of letters to personnel is if you know them you can write formal and if you don’t know them it is semi – formal and ends in ` yours sincerely`
M3 – Letters are used to call someone to come in for a statement. A letter showing pension changes for the police.
D2 – Advantage: It is not as nervous as speaking on a phone call.
Disadvantage: People won’t reply and you don’t know if they have got the letter.
P5 – A Memorandum is an informal letter to show a reminder.
M3 – It is used in a uninformed public service such as police force as a member of that force may leave memorandums for someone to change their shifts.

Verbal Communication
One way communication
P5 – One way communication can take place in a lecture, speech, a presentation or instruction. One person is speaking whereas the other is listening. Questions are to be asked at the end.
M3 – A teacher lecturing is an example of one way communication.
D2 – Advantage: Allows student to listen. Disadvantage: People may be stuck at the beginning and have no idea what the lecturer is talking about but has to wait until the end to ask a question.
Two way communication
P5 – Two way communication can be in situations such as discussions, debates, arguments etc. It is the most common use of verbal communication.
M3 - Two way communication can be used in the police force when it comes to discussions.
D2 – Advantage: Everyone gets a say.
Disadvantage: May turn out as an argument.
Questioning Skills
P5 – The two type of questioning skills are open questions and closed questions.
M3 – Open questions can be used in interviews.
Closed questions can be used in the fire brigade when there is a fire and the fire fighter asks if anyone is in the house.
D2 – Closed questions – Advantage: Quick and easy.
Disadvantage: Not enough detail.
Open questions – Advantage: You can say as much as you want.
Disadvantage: Time consuming
Use of jargon
P5 - Jargon is the use of key words, phrases or acronyms that are used specifically within the organisation.
M3 – Jargon can be used in the police force to communicate in a quick and short way.
D2 – Advantage: Quick and simple
Disadvantage: Some people may not understand it.
Abbreviations
P5 – Abbreviations are shortened forms of a word or phrase such as ‘don’t’ instead of ‘do not’. Abbreviations are also shortened forms of names of organisations such as BBC, which is the British Broadcasting Cooperation.
M3 – Abbreviations can be used in teaching if they are having an English lesson.
D2 – Advantage: They are using the full word and not shortcuts.
Disadvantage: You may be speaking for longer as you are not shortening words down.
Speaking in a group
P5 - Group discussion is a vital part of many organisations. It allows all the people to be involved and express their thoughts and opinions. To do this effectively it is important to be able to organise your thoughts sensibly so that you can share your views and opinions with others well.
M3 – SIAG can be used in the fire brigade when they are put into groups to go out and stop a fire.
D2 – Advantage: Everyone gets a say. Disadvantage: People may not want to express their opinions.
Tone and emphasis
P5 - The way in which we speak can add meaning to what we are saying. The tone of our voice and the way we emphasise words can make the sentences and words we speak mean different things.
M3 – Tone and emphasis can be used in teaching when a teacher shouts at the pupil for misbehaving.
D2 – Advantage: People will know when you’re joking around or being serious.
Disadvantage: People may take some things you say the wrong way.
Audience awareness
P5 - When we speak we sometimes change how we speak depending on who is listening. You may use a style of language and tone to speak to your friends compared to how you might speak to a stranger.
M3 - Audience awareness can be used in meetings. You would speak politely and maturely in a meeting compared to how you speak to your friends.
D2 – Advantage: aware of the audience so you can give them what they need and what is appropriate. Disadvantage: A comedian would use different types of jokes for different audiences. If the comedian tells the wrong kind of jokes because he is not aware of the kind of audience he is working with then his show will not do well, even though the same jokes would be found very funny by a different kind of audience.
Verbal presentations of basic information
P5 - Before you give a verbal presentation you will need to think about factors such as:
Can everyone see and hear you?
How big is the audience?
Have you planned your presentation fully?
Have you got all the visual aids you need?
Who are the audience?
M3 – VPOBI can be used in meetings in the police when you are doing a presentation.
D2 – Advantage: You will gain confidence.
Disadvantage: You may be quiet and people may not be able to hear you.
Barriers to verbal communication
P5 - There can be a lot of things that stand in your way when you communicate verbally , Problem with the audience , problem with you etc. Barriers can exist in operation and non-operational situations. Operational situations would rest upon the public service involved.
M3 – An operational situation for the police service might be attending a car crash and for the army it might be a unit in Afghanistan involved in a skirmish with the Taliban. An example of non-operational situation might be when a police officer attends a briefing. Listening
