That company can also be called:
• An e-commerce hosting service
• An e-commerce marketplace
Whether you call it "Fred" or one of these other names, you need to find a place for your web page files to reside. There are two basic hosting options:
• You sign up with a marketplace that functions as the host. This might be eBay, Shopify, Amazon, or any number of other organizations on which lots of people sell. This company gives you a shopping cart, a payment system, and other options.
• You set up your own store with a company that does only hosting: it provides you with space on a server and necessary software like MySQL or WordPress. The rest is up to you. This is often called self-hosting.
There are pros and cons to each of these options. They can be likened to renting an apartment in a building someone else owns (and where others rent space as well) and owning your own house (where you're both in charge of your space and ultimately responsible for it, too). Signing up with a marketplace is good for those who are just starting out.
