Unit 7 Text Questions Forensic Science
1. What is DNA? Where is it found?
DNA or deoxyribonucleic acid refers to the molecules that carry our genetic information. DNA is the basic building block of out genetic makeup.
2. What is mitochondrial DNA?
Mitochondrial DNA is inherited from ones mother and is found outside of the cell nucleus.
3. What is CODIS? How does it work?
CODIS are a software program that contains DNA profiles of convicted offenders, missing persons, crime scene evidence, and other sources. The Federal Bureau of Investigations uses this program.
4. What are complimentary base patterns? Why are they important?
Adenine (A) and Thymine (T) and Cytosine (C) and Guanine (G) these are important because these strands connect to each other to equal the strand of DNA.
5. What challenges do you think giving expert testimony about DNA would have? How would you try to overcome these challenges?
None I think that it would probably be pretty easy.

Deoxyribose Nucleic Acid (DNA) is a polynucleotide molecule that encodes the genetic instructions used in the development and functioning of all known living organisms and many viruses. Most DNA molecules are double stranded helices, consisting of two polynucleotide strands made up of simpler molecules known as nucleotides. A nucleotide is made up of an organic nitrogenous base, a deoxyribose sugar and phosphate groups. It is order of these bases which make up the genetic code; a set of rules, by which information is encoded within genetic material.…

DNA stands for Deoxyribonucleic acid and looks like a spiral. The spiral is also known as a double helix. The strands are made up of our genetic information, composed of genes and chromosomes. There are four bases divided among purines and pyrimidines. On the purines there are Adenine (A) and Guanine (G). On the pyrimidines there are Cytosine (C) and Thymine (T). The base pairs are Adenine and Thymine (A-T) and Cytosine and Guanine (C-G). DNA is found in the nucleus of every human cell. Humans have 46 chromosomes. When a cell reproduces, the chromosomes get copied and distributed to each offspring.…

    8. Do you think Crippen killed his wife? Why or why not? No I do not think Crippen killed his wife. There are a lot of inconsistencies involved in this case and there is no proof found that he killed her. 7. What other inconsistencies were found in the case when the evidence was re-examined? Why do you think these inconsistencies were ignored at the time of the Crippen trial? An inconsistency found in this case was the fact that after the victim was poisoned why were they cut up if it was supposed to look like a natural death. I think these inconsistencies were ignored at the time because they weren't as advanced with cases like that back in the day. 6. What other evidence linked Crippen to the remains in the cellar? Other evidences that linked Crippen to the remains in the cellar were the pajama shirt that was found at the crime scene matched to the pajama bottoms of Crippen's. The label on the cloth also indicated that the remains couldn't have been there before Crippen's arrival at his home, because of when and where the type of pajamas were distributed. 5. What do modern forensic scientists find when they examine samples of the remains? DNA results concluded that the DNA of descendants of Cora did not match that of the victim's, which means the victim was not Crippen's wife. 4. Why was forensic science important in Crippen's trial? How was it used in the trial? Forensic Science was important in Crippen's trial because the evidence gave insight to the jury. The Pathologist showed to the audience that the tissue remains contained hyoscine, the same substance used by Dr. Crippen. 3. Why do you think people were so interested in Crippen's case? In my opinion, people were really interested in Crippen case because it was the crime of the century that drew a lot of attention whether it is in the past or present based on how the crime was committed and how it was dealt with. 2. What was Crippen accused of? Why was he accused of this crime? He was accused of killing…

    1. What do you think you'd like most about working as a forensic scientist? Why? What do you think you'd like least about working as a forensic scientist? Why? I think what I’d like most about working as a forensic scientist is piecing the evidence together and making a timeline of what occurred at the crime scene. I think it would be really cool to have that “aha” moment while evaluating and analyzing evidence, and to be able to realize and understand from one item how it relates to a crime. I think I would like this because it would be interesting to be able to see a piece of evidence, and study it, and be able to fit the pieces together with other evidence and understand how they all relate to each other. I think what I’d like least about working as a forensic scientist is having to discriminate between relevant evidence and irrelevant evidence, and having to work through frustrating cases where the evidence doesn’t seem to match up.…

According to Kenneth Saladin, deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA) is “a long threadlike molecule with a uniform diameter of 2mm, although its length varies greatly from the smallest to the largest chromosomes.” What does this mean? Basically, it is a long string that contains a person’s genetic information. DNA has been studied overtime and it has changed life today with major impacts. These impacts are both positive and negative.…
