● A healthy diet helps to keep and improve people’s health and wellbeing.
● Healthy lifestyles are mostly associated with; family traditions, health education, likable occupation, safe environment, adequate nutrition, physical fitness, absence of bad habits or addiction, personal hygiene, love and tenderness and positive social communication. Carbohydrates
● Carbohydrates are one of three classes of food called macronutrients.
● The basic unit of a carbohydrate is a simple sugar, but these simple sugars can be linked together in infinite ways, and will have very different effects on the body depending on their arrangement.
● Examples of carbohydrates include; pasta, bread, potatoes, rice, etc.
● Eating bread is good because it contains carbohydrates which is needed for energy.
● Bread contains fibre which helps with digestion.
Protein
● Proteins are large, complex molecules that play many critical roles in the body.
● They do most of the work in cells and are required for the structure, function and regulation of the body’s tissues and organs.
● Examples of proteins include; fish, meat, poultry and pulses.
Fat
● A little bit of fat is essential in everyone’s diet.
● Fats provide a source of concentrated energy as well as the fatsoluble vitamins A, D, E and K.
● We need fat for hormone metabolism, healthy skin and hair, tissue repair, protecting the internal organs and to prevent excessive loss of body heat.
● There are two main types of fat; saturated and unsaturated.
● Examples of fats include; eggs, full fat yogurt, full fat milk, sardines, tuna, oil, cream, cheese, cakes, etc.
● Eating large portions of fatty foods can cause weight gain.
Vitamins and Minerals
● Five servings of different fruit and vegetables daily will ensure you get plenty of vitamins and minerals.
