Universal Themes In Sandra Cisneros Abuelito Who

Around the world many people experience the same feelings and emotions. This is an example of universal theme. The folk tales, “The Old Grandfather and His Little Grandson” by Leo Tolstoy and the poem, “Abuelito Who” by Sandra Cisneros share the same universal theme. The universal theme expresses respect and honors your elders. Both stories were about old people being mistreated because younger characters thought they were useless. Additionally, the younger generation felt that the elderly were unproductive and were just extra mouths to feed. Overall, the younger generation realized they had wronged their elders. As stated by Source 2, the main character is very old and is aging fast as time goes by. At the beginning of the poem, they both have a typical relationship. An example is, “Abuelito who throws coins like rain and ask who loves him.” Doing such an action obviously is a way to earn the granddaughters' love. As the poem progresses, Abuelito is getting older and becoming more and more ill. The granddaughter seems ignorant as to how grave this is turning out to be, as she simply says that "[he] can't come out to play" and "[he] sleeps in his room all night and day. When someone is sick, the best remedy is sleep. The theme is describing in the finally line of the poem, as though the granddaughter is trying to get as many memories out as they can before their grandfather and the relationship the granddaughter has with him is lost. This is supported by, “is blankets and spoons and big brown shoes / who snores up and down up and down up and down again”. Overall, nothing will last forever, and in the end you have to decide what you are going to
