To Kill a Mockingbird presents the idea that integrity is doing what’s right when no one is looking. This trait is displayed when Atticus is talking to Scout about keeping a level head in school and why he is defending Tom Robinson’s. Attics states, “ This case, Tom Robinson’s case, is something that goes to the essence of a man’s conscience Scout, I couldn’t go to church and worship God if I didn’t try to help this man” (139). Atticus is a man of integrity and this is shown through everything he does. He wouldn’t be able to sleep at night with a clean conscience if he didn’t try and help Tom. You rarely win but sometimes you do. One of the first times this idea is evident is when Atticus reveals that Mrs.Dubose is the most courageous person he ever met despite her rude remarks towards him. Atticus further explains this when saying, “ It’s when you know you're licked before you begin but you begin anyway and you see it through no matter what. You rarely win but sometimes you do” (149). Showing courage during difficult times is incredibly hard. Just because you show courage and stand up for what’s right doesn’t mean you will always win. And this novel is a great example of this thought. But in the end you’ll feel better doing the right thing, like Atticus Finch, and if you do win the victory is
