Chapter Nine: Unmarried Live: Singlehood and Cohabitation
Cohabitation is on the rise plain and simple, in the textbook on page 331 figure (9.1) shows that. In 1960 it shows that about .6 million couples were living together that were not married, this is what cohabiting means. Then fast forward 60 years and that number has jumped a crazy amount. The world we live in today and always have lived in is based on money. Almost everyone has to work and make money to provide for him or her self, their family, or for other reasons. Cohabitation is getting popular because it is easier on couples financially. To give you a prime example, my sister goes to nursing school in Des Moines. She is currently about 2 hours away from family so she did have an apartment she was renting. I have been in a pretty serious relationship. I have been with my girlfriend for three years. When I am done with my four years of college. I plan to try to find a job, well my girlfriend plans to attend PA school. Well I plan to get a job where she is attending PA school so that we can share an apartment and I can help her out paying rent. After thinking about all the terms in this chapter and types of cohabitation, I think that I would classify my type of cohabitation as precursor marriage. If all works out and it is a ways away, We will probably be very close to becoming engaged and I will be wanting to live with her before we get married. So that's what type of cohabitation I think our cohabitation would be under. At the same time it will be an experiment to just how marriage could be, so it's like we could be killing two birds with one stone. From the readings it has helped me understand cohabitating a lot more and the benefits and consequences that can come with
