Unrestricted Submarine Warfare In Germany Essay
The German U-boats were powerful enough to take down even some of the largest vessels in the British Navy. Armed with deck guns, explosives and torpedoes, these submarines were capable of causing great destruction, often bringing enormous death tolls by attacking merchant ships or cruise liners. Eventually, Germany took a policy of unrestricted submarine warfare in which there are no neutral vessels, so the U-boats would sink any ships in the waters around Great Britain.

The Invasion of Normandy allowed for the Allies to push the Germans from both sides, freeing resources for the Pacific. To aid against this, Training aircraft such as the AT-6 Texan were fitted with 500 Lb. bombs and flew along the coast. When more destroyers were needed the US built a smaller ship called a DE (destroyer Escort). Destroyers also worked in teams, one locating the U-boat with sonar and directing the second to a correct attack position. Cities along the coast went into blackouts to help prevent such events. The British built a smaller ship for the same duty called a Corvett. The Allies also were ahead in radar and sonar, and were able to detect U-boats either on the surface or under the…

In May 1915, German U-boats destroyed the Lusitania, a British ocean liner, so that along with other atrocities committed in Belgium painted Germany as a villain to the American people. In early 1917, Germany decided to declare all out submarine warfare and attack every commercial ship headed to Britain. Germany, knowing that this would ultimately pull America into the fray, chose to reach out to Mexico making the promise that if Mexico were to ally with Germany they would return the land that was lost during the Mexican-American War. That message, now known as the Zimmerman Telegram, was intercepted by British intelligence and shared with United States. When this made news headlines, the American people were outraged as Germany started to…

This made it hard for Americans to be neutral because they were led to believe that the Germans were cruel people. The Germans were not cruel, but they were not perfect either. They used submarines, called “U-boats,” to break through the British blockade. This was very controversial because international law said that if you wanted to destroy a ship that was a warship, you needed to stop the ship, warn them about what you were planning to do, and let passengers get off and go to safety. Submarines do not play by these rules.…

The United States has actually not declared war since World War II. In Article I, section 8 of the U.S. Constitution, Congress has the power,"to declare war [and] grant letters of marque and reprisal."(archives.gov) But Article II,Section 2 provides that,"The president shall be Commander-in-Chief of the Army and Navy of the United States." (fed-soc.org) While it's clear that the intended action for Congress alone to declare war, presidents don’t necessarily act with them but rather on their own will and belief. Truth be told as well, many events were presidents acted on their own have occoured. For example, after President Harry Truman bypassed Congress to go to war in Korea, presidents have paid almost no attention to the constitutional requirements.…

Von Bismarck, a German aristocrat during the mid to late eighteen hundreds, believed in a smaller, but more powerful Germany. Later efforts were made by Wilhelm II in the late nineteenth century to make Bismarck’s idea come to fruition by militarizing Germany and designing new policy. During his reign, Wilhelm was able to build three dozen battleships. As a result, Germany became a much more dominant naval power leading up to the Great War. The creation of the submarine also gave the Germans an unprecedented power over Great Britain. It was not the creation of the submarine that frightened Britain and the United States, but it was how the submarine was used. On February 4th, 1915, Germany threatened to sink any ships within British waters. Even neutral nations were warned not to sail within the restricted area. However, if neutral nations chose to, they would be doing so at their own risk. As a result, Great Britain protested that Germany could not suddenly change the rules of war. At the same time, the United States instantly opposed the war zone and warned Germany that it would do whatever it could to safeguard American lives and…
