Fatigues are a group in the Unwind society that serves the function of helping Unwinds get to a safe heaven called the graveyard so they can avoid getting taken to camps. These Fatigues are not known to be nice but they are all helping, caring people. “I’d wish you’d stop calling her the Dragon Lady.. she's saving your ass --- the least you could do is show some respect”. (107) After Hayden calls a Fatigue named Sonia “The Dragon Lady”, Risa responds by mentioning that “The Dragon Lady” is actually saving him. The evidence here shows Fatigues specialized function is society, which is to help. “What are you gonna do, kill me? I thought you were trying to save us. That gives the Fatigue a moment's pause.”(163). Fatigues may not be the nicest people but they wouldn’t kill an unwind that they are trying to save. Demonstrating their function, to help or save others. “Why are you doing this for us? Risa asked one of them during their second week. The Fatigue had almost been rote in her answer.. Saving you and others like you is an act of conscience.. Doing it is its own reward”. (143). You observe that Fatigues don’t do it for money they do it because it's an act of conscience and gives them feeling of reward.
