Hansel and Greta
Hansel and Greta: The story you are about to read is a recalling of events that have actually occurred. If you don’t like horror stories filled with witches and murder, then you should definitely pick up another book. We have decided to tell our story from both points of view because, as you may have already heard, for most of the time, we were separated. Now you may have heard stories about an evil stepmother being included in our story. We can tell you now, that is just not the case. Stories about evil stepmothers have been spread around lately by our good old friend Cinderella, just so that she can feel good about herself.
Hansel: Hans here. I should warn you, do not believe whatever my sister, Greta is about to tell you. Normal girls around her age are expected to be obedient, truthful and polite…she is none of those things. Greta is a devious, manipulative liar. I mean, She even fooled the witch. She will probably try to put the blame on me when it was really all her fault we got caught up in all the witchy drama in the first place. If she hadn’t…never mind, I’ll tell you that story another time. Anyway, Dad found out about what Greta had been doing to others. He was on a low wage and had trouble paying the others back. He finally had enough.
One minute we were chewing on some lovely warm bread and the next, Greta and I found ourselves waking up in the middle of the forest. Dad had drugged both of us. We had grown up with stories about the forest, none of which ended happily. There were tales told of Vampires, Witches, Goblins and Werewolves. The trees in the forest were agreed to be untrustworthy as many townspeople told stories of how some liked to strangle people but others would lower a branch and offer you food.
‘Hans, I’m scared’ Greta sobbed.
As much as I disliked my sister at that moment, I could not stand to see her cry. I sat next to her and comforted her.
A while later, we both felt hungry and knew that it would soon be

I sat in the corner, occasionally glancing up at the other faces. There was this one lady who looked like she was about to cry most likely because she was frightened, and there was this man who was shaking in fear. Seeing these faces just made the situation worse for me. I tightly squeezed my mom’s arm, hoping it would make me feel better…

We’d heard rumors about former wolf-girls who never adapted to their new culture. It was assumed that they were returned to our native country, the vanishing woods. We liked to speculate about this before bedtime, scaring ourselves with stories of catastrophic bliss. It was the disgrace, the failure that we all guiltily hoped for in our hard beds. Twitching with the shadow question: Whatever will become of me?…

Thirsty I made my way towards the kitchen to pour myself a glass of Cranberry Pomegranate juice. Sitting around what’s left of the dining room table one of its hinges obliterated merely three table legs left as a support. A branch from the oak tree near the kitchen window kept tapping against the walls and windows as the wind blows. This branch at night when the murky moonlight blooms against the massive tree meticulously resemble an oversized man with a knife trying to break into the house. I often dreaded coming down the stairs for a cup of water or juice late at night when the lights were off. The terrified image and screeches sound on the window always send me scurrying right back to my room and ducking under the covers trembling for dear…

Changes are not easily made in life. To be able to change, one must be able to handle and accept the consequences that going to happen because it not only affects the person that is willing to change, but it also affects the people that surround them. Common themes that are seen to advance Southern Gothic Literature short stories are the usage of “tradition” and “interiority” as a means of getting the readers to feel sympathy for the characters that have no control of changing their fate. From gender roles to society rules, people have an appetite for control and traditions are one aspect of life that people can and will control. Traditions are beliefs/procedures that are made from one point in time and then continued and done routinely. When traditions are being challenge to change or are in the process of being changed, the ones that are accustomed the most to certain traditions being to fear of losing control of what is theirs. In the short stories by Alice Munro and Shirley Jackson, both authors show that some traditions are found to be helpful and advantageous while others are poor and…

    Gretel in Darkness

Anne Sexton, in her poem "Hansel and Gretel", sticks close to the original version of the Grimm Brothers. The poem is told in the third person. In the poem the speaker starts off in an affectionate tone. A somewhat "adult baby talk" to a child. The terms are very motherly, "I will eat you up. This irony of saying "I am going to eat you up" is in direct contrast as to being eaten up by the witch in the original tale. After the affectionate open, the tone takes a sadistic almost perverse twist as examples of spitting, biting and tying up are used.…

As a child, I was raised my whole life in the country side. My mother and I had lived for years in a lonely shack at the edge of the small village we called home. At the very edge of the village was an eerie forest, a forest that seemed to beckon unwary fools into entering it. I was always told as a child to never go near the forest, especially at night. Some people say that a bear lives there, while others say that a serial killer lives there, and some even say that a monster lives there, either way the forest is always portrayed with death. I remember various occasions in which I would wake up for reasons unknown, only to find myself outside in my backyard staring at the edge of the forest, the soft moonlight caressing my bare skin, the crisp night air followed by the refreshing scent of grass. On one occasion I thought I heard a…

I’ve never been much of an outdoors person, the outdoors scare me, I don’t like bugs, or the dark. I would have never have been caught in the woods after dark the way Ulrich and Georg were. In the story “Interlopers” by Saki, two men, Ulrich and Georg, had a long existing argument over land owned by Ulrich; one night they encountered each other in the woods with the idea to kill one another, ironically, a beech tree had fallen on the men leaving them to struggle until they were found. While struggling to live the men decided that their feud was irrelevant and ended it, they called aloud for help but what came wasn’t what they hoped for, the responders were wolves. The story is still popular today because the conflict is relatable, the irony and suspense was interesting, and mood fit in well with the story.…

Living right by the woods is scarier than I thought it would be. The nightmares didn’t come to me last night, but neither did sleep. I was tossing and turning most of the night, jumping a little, to every small sound. Some came from the house, but some came from the woods, making me imagine having all kinds of monsters lurking in the shadows, waiting for the right moment to break in our home and attack us.…
