Upon The Burning Of Our House
• Anne was very domestic. She married at the age of 16 and later had 8 children.
• Anne never intended on having her writing published, her brother-in-law took her writings and had them published.
• She was the first woman to be published. Her book was also the American book of poems to be published.
• After migrating to the Massachusetts Bay Colony, her husband became the governor.
• Two poets that have influenced her writing are, Edmund Spenser and Philip Sidney.
• If you look to the right you can see a picture of her first book which was published in 1650.
• Even though she was doing many chores and raising eight children, she filled any free time she had with writing.
• Due to the way her father raised her, she had an advanced education for her time.

• She had a personal library containing over 800 hundred books but due to a fire, all her books and belonging turned into ashes. In order to pay homage to her library she wrote, Upon the Burning of Our House.
• Anne’s audience ranges since it was never intended to be published.
• She was known for writing to her husband, her poem, To My Dear and Loving Husband, and, A Letter to Her Husband, Absent Upon Publick Employment, was dedicated to him.
• Her poem, Upon the Burning of Our House, was intended for her family to remember their grand library.
• A good majority of her works were poetry.

    I believe that Anne Bradstreet (1612 – 1672), made major contributions to early American Literature through her poetry. Her poems stressed the daily struggles and stress of Puritan life. Bradstreet had struggled with the validity of the Scriptures, but through her life experiences she developed a strong belief in God. Bradstreet paved the way for future female writers.
