SOMEBODY asked for the cigars. We had talked long, and the conversation as beginning to languish; the tobacco smoke had got into the heavy curtains, he wine had got into those brains which were liable to become heavy, and it was already perfectly evident that, unless somebody did something to rouse our oppressed spirits, the meeting would soon come to its natural conclusion, and we, the guests, would speedily go home to bed, and most certainly to sleep. No one had said anything very remarkable; it may be that no one had anything very remarkable to say. Jones had given us every particular of his last hunting adventure in Yorkshire. Mr. Tompkins, of Boston, had explained at elaborate length those working principles, by the due and careful maintenance of which the Atchison, Topeka, and Santa Fé Railroad not only extended its territory, increased its departmental influence, and transported live stock without starving them to death before the day of actual delivery, but, also, had for years succeeded in deceiving those passengers who bought its tickets into the fallacious belief that the corporation aforesaid was really able to transport human life without destroying it. Signor Tombola had endeavoured to persuade us, by arguments which we took no trouble to oppose, that the unity of his country in no way resembled the average modern torpedo, carefully planned, constructed with all the skill of the greatest European arsenals, but, when constructed, destined to be directed by feeble hands into a region where it must undoubtedly explode, unseen, unfeared, and unheard, into the illimitable wastes of political chaos.

Scanlan went to work in a mine near Centralia when he was 16, studied engineering at night school, and worked 13 years a mine examiner for a coal company, until in 1941 he was appointed one of 16 Illinois State mine inspectors by Governor Green upon recommendation of the state representative from Scanlan’s district (Martin, 1948). During Scanlan’s time in office there was a disaster known as The Blast in Centralia No. 5 that killed one hundred and eleven men. Scanlan was one that took his job serious and in my opinion was about self-discovery. He went directly to the mine and spoke directly with the miners to conduct the reports that were needed. On the Sept. 27th, Southern Railway ordered engineer Joseph “Steve” Broady to make a particularly dangerous run. The train hauled mail as part of a lucrative contract between Southern Railway and the US Post Office. The train, known as Fast Mail, earned a reputation for timely delivery.     Dreams of the frontier, opportunity, and the idea of more have been at the core of American ideals from the very beginning. With this came the renowned American optimism which has become an integral part of our culture. Shames writes that these views have always been a part of our culture, and he uses a great example for evidence of this optimism in his detailing of the story of speculators in Texas in the 1880’s from F. Stanley’s Story of the Texas Panhandle Railroads. The passage goes on and describes how speculators would risk all they had to build a town from scratch in the middle of nowhere, hiring workmen to build saloons, churches, hotels and more, then bribing people to move to the town for a short period of time in hopes that railroad companies would be lured into passing a railroad through if it succeeded in casting a semblance of a real town. If the speculators were successful in this risky investment and a railroad was built, their returns would be unbelievably large, but if not they faced losing everything they put into the towns. One specific example Shames uses is of a speculator named Sanborn who built the town of Amarillo and succeeded in attracting the railroads and earning himself a fortune. Although plagued by devastating events in his past, Andrew Carnegie was a captain of industry because of his smart investments and, ultimately, a philanthropist because of his selfless acts. Before owning the world’s largest steel corporation, Andrew Carnegie was a mere messenger boy for a telegraph office. It was at the telegraph office where Thomas A. Scott took a liking to Carnegie. After many years of working closely under Scott and moving up the ranks, Carnegie became superintendent of the Pennsylvania Railroad and Scott’s right hand man. Scott later gave Carnegie the task of connecting the East to the West by way of a bridge that crossed the Mississippi. On a hunt for a material that could withstand the rapid waters, Carnegie came across steel – a radically new substance that was more flexible than iron so it could handle the harsh tidewaters of the Mississippi.     Buckley opens his essay with a personal anecdote describing the acceptance of “whatsoever” he realizes that outside it was below freezing temperature and in the train it was 85 degrees.
