Introduction
In 1907, 19-year old James E Casey founded the American Messenger Company with borrowed capital of only $100.00. Established in Seattle, Washington the messenger service ran errands, delivered packages, and carried notes & baggage to customers either by foot or bicycle. Their mission centered on customer courtesy, reliability, round-the-clock service and low rates. In 1919, the American Messenger Company changed its name to United Parcel Service (now officially UPS) but their mission never changed. UPS grew from a modest messenger company servicing those exclusively in the United States to a multi-billion dollar corporation that today services millions of people across the globe. UPS specializes in logistics and distribution, transportation and freight by air, sea, ground and rail, as well as international trade management and customs brokerage. With over 70,900 retail access points, an aircraft fleet of 562 jets and a delivery fleet of 101,000 automobiles, UPS is able to serve approximately 8.8 million customers a day (UPS , "Worldwide").
With annual sales in the billions of $49.5, $53.1 & $54.1 and annual profits of $5.6, $6.0 & $1.3 in 2010, 2011 & 2012, respectively, UPS has remained a leader in their field (UPS , "Annual"). Trading on the NYSE under ticker symbol UPS, a 5 year review shows that with the exception of sharp drop from $56.11 on December 29, 2008 to $39.38 on March 2, 2009, the stock price is on the rise and closed at $82.52 on April 17, 2013 (Yahoo).
UPS exists in a highly competitive industry with other key players such as DHL, FedEx & USPS. In this highly competitive market, no single company dominates and each has a similar supply chain structure which makes it difficult to differentiate one company from another. Strengths in this industry rely heavily on reliability, delivery options,
