The prairie rattlesnake is one of the most venomous snakes in North America. The prefered habitat for the prairie rattlesnake is in the mid United States and is mostly found living in grasslands and prairies. They will also live in wooded arias, brush caves and near streams where the food is plentiful.…
Francis Marion was born in the winter of 1732 (his exact birth date is unknown) at Goatfield Plantation in St. John's Parish, Berkeley County, South Carolina. His parents, Gabriel and Esther Marion, were of French Huguenot descent. The Huguenots were French Protestants who had suffered persecution for their beliefs during the reign of Louis XIV. Following the 1685 revocation of the Edict of Nantes, which forbade the practice of Protestantism, 50,000 Huguenots left France. Marion's grandparents were among them. Along with 70 or 80 other Huguenot families, they farmed the banks of the Santee River near Charleston, South Carolina, where the land proved ideal for growing rice and indigo, a highly treasured blue dye…

Hurry! Quick run!! I would never own a Pit Bull, they are to unpredictably dangerous. To begin with, Pit Bulls don't have the finest reputation. For example, they are known to extremely harm children. Also, they are known to fight and kill other dogs. They are also known to be vicious and harmful.…
The American Staffordshire Terrier (also known as Pit Bull) is believed to be a man-eating beast. But is this breed all it's made out to be? The Pit Bull started in the Unites States; it has been developed since the early 1800's as a result of crosses between the bulldogs of that time and game terriers. Although the early ancestors of this breed came from England, the development of the American Staffordshire Terrier is the story of a truly American breed. This type of dog was instrumental in the success of farmers and settlers who developed this country. They were used for general farm work, hunting wild pigs, bears, and other large game, guarding the homestead, and general companionship. A number of the early ancestors were also developed for…

A snowy owl will live out the entire course of its life in the open artic in most cases, while others will migrate out of the arctic tundra. They will hunt, eat, mate, reproduce, and die where they reside. The largest bird in the artic, by a weight of up to six pounds, the snowy owl stands roughly two feet tall (National Georaphic). The snowy owl is a fearless hunter and strong protector. The snowy owls are diurnal, hunting mainly during the day unlike most species of owls that tend to be nocturnal. They mainly live in isolated and remote regions of the greater north; this protects them from human interaction. Snowy owls are immensely protective over their home, hunting grounds, and offspring.…
“Go back to California!”, is just one of the many things supporters of the Mexican Gray Wolf reintroduction program were hearing at a meeting about “predators” in Alpine this February. Over three hundred people were in attendance and only a handful of people were supporters of these dog sized predators. They sat quietly listening to everyone bash the most endangered mammal in North America (Corrigan). The Mexican Gray Wolf is about the size of a German Shepherd, four to five feet long and seventy to ninety pounds. Up until recently they only existed in zoos but with the Mexican Wolf Reintroduction project and the help of United States Fish and Wildlife Service (USFWS), Arizona Game and Fish, White Mountain Apache Tribe, United States Department of Agriculture(USDA), animal and plant health inspection service, wildlife…
Some people think that Pit Bulls are inherently vicious but that is not true, Pit Bulls are only vicious if someone makes them that way. There are not bad dogs, only bad people. A pit bull is not inherently vicious, if they are aggressive and attack, either the person most likely deserved it or they were trained to do so. Furthermore, Pit bulls are no more vicious than Golden Retrievers, Beagles, and other well known dogs. There was a recent study by the American Temperament Testing Society that tested 122 dog breeds and Pit Bulls had a passing score of 86.8%. Pit Bulls ranked fourth for the highest passing breed in this study. You are very unlikely to be fatally attacked by a Pit Bull. In fact, you are 60 times more likely to die from falling…
Four paws, wagging tail, and cold wet nose, the image that comes to mind probably isn’t a Rottweiler, Doberman, or Pit Bull even though the description covers all dogs. Assuming you are like most people you associate those specific breeds with junkyards, heavy chain leashes, and flash of sharp white gnashing teeth. Have you ever been bitten by one of these breeds or had a negative encounter? Probably not, but just like so many other misconceptions provided by the media, you believe it. Per the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, “Approximately 4.5 million dog bites occur each year in the United States.” (“Dog Bite Prevention”). There always seems to…
Pit bulls are a breed that is completely misunderstood. Mainly because of the negative media attention they receive. . In all actuality, a pit bull is a crossbreed between different breeds of terriers and bulldogs. The media likes to portray the pit bull as a breed that can not be trained, much less handled by their owners. In all actuality it depends on how they are raised.…
An Anonymous author stated, “Pit bulls are beauty without vanity, strength without insolence, courage without ferocity, and all the virtues of man without the vices.” (Anonymous) As a Pit bull proprietor, I feel that Pit bulls are consistently confounded animals. In fact, any animal, pit bull or even a Chihuahua can be merciless or delicate. Additionally, adore and minding wins out with animals basically as it guarantees with individuals. Furthermore, affection is the item that makes a good or repulsive puppy and not their kind of breed or innate beautifying agents.…
In the book, “A Sea of Grass,” by Outwater, she delivers a strong argument as to why prairie dogs are beneficial to the grassland ecosystem. Prairie dogs create habitats for other species, because over 200 species live nearby prairie dog burrows. The burrows are never built all the same. Some have special pockets, turn-around rooms, and others have chambers with grass. The temperature underground is convenient for species living there, being as it is warm in winter, and cooler in the summer. Outwater presents a valid reason for protecting the rodents. For example, she states,” In the process of constructing their towns of tunnels, the prairie dogs once moved tons of subsoil above ground, where they mixed it with top soil and organic matter..”(Outwater 74). Many species benefit from this churning of the soil because it creates grasses which are richer in protein. The prairie dogs also help to increase the amount of water that makes it underground, which enhances the productivity of the soil. Concurrently, more water goes into rivers and streams. Another component of prairie dogs is that they are social, loving creatures. They engage in their own communication. When they see a predator, they make a bark that signals all the dogs around to protect…
While I find it rather creative to imagine a skunk and a coyote to conspire together to murder prairie dogs and rabbits, and although I feel I am doing a disservice to hundreds of years of Navaho storytellers, I am going to attempt to creatively edit parts of the story “Coyote, Skunk, and Prairie Dogs” as a written works, and retool it so that it makes more sense as a modern children’s fairy tale. Not that children would be interested in a story about killing and eating prairie dogs, but I am going to attempt to keep the plot, storyline and outcome as similar to the Navaho trickster tale as possible.…
Did you know that foxes are solitary hunters? Unlike animals such as wolves, they hunt alone rather than in packs. There are seven characteristics of life that apply to all living things, but they may not be applied in the same way. For example, fennec foxes have fur on their feet to help them move around in the sandy Sahara. The characteristics of life can be applied to all living things, even small animals such as the fennec fox.…
