SUBJECT: Environmental Scanning Websites and Databases

As per your request I have investigated the website of the U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) (www.bls.gov), and the website of Export.gov (www.export.gov), to determine their applicability towards providing information that could be useful for conducting an environmental scan that would be necessary for developing a strategic marketing plan.

In addition, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics provides information on the Consumer Price Index, which describes the “changes in prices paid by urban consumers for a representative basket of goods and services”(bls.gov).

Export.gov
“Export.gov brings together resources from across the U.S. Government to assist American businesses in planning their international sales strategies [to] succeed in today’s global marketplace” (export.gov). Selecting a country such as India to conduct trade with, provides you with an overview of the U.S. Commercial Service and the U.S. Department of Commerce’s network of offices abroad that can help with conducting business in the selected country (export.gov). Most of the information provided covers general topics that would be useful to someone wanting to get an idea of how to export goods and services to foreign countries (export.gov). The India Country Commercial Guide provides information on India’s economic trends, political environment, trade regulations, and leading industry sectors for U.S export, etc. (export

The consumer pricing index (CPI) is a measure of the price level of consumer goods and services. The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics began calculating and issuing the monthly calculation in 1919. The CPI is calculated by observing price changes among a wide range of products and weighing these price changes by the share of income consumers spend to purchase them. The CPI focuses on approximating a cost of living index and can be used to evaluate our currency and prices. CPI is defined as “a measure of the average change over time in the prices paid by urban consumers for a market basket of consumer goods and services” (Federal Reserve Bank, 2010). The consumer pricing index can be used for three things “(1) as a Cost of Living Index (COLI); i.e., as a measure of the relative cost of achieving the standard of living when facing two different sets of prices for the same group of commodities; (2) as a consumption deflator; i.e., the price change component for a decomposition of a value ratio into price and quantity components and (3) as a measure of general inflation” (Federal Reserve Bank, 2010).…

Inflation can be defined as the overall general upward price movement of goods and services in an economy (BLS, 2007). It is a continual rise in price levels and, subsequently, purchasing power is falling. The Consumer Price Index (CPI) measures inflation as experienced by consumers in their day-to-day living expenses and is separated into two groups or populations of consumers: The CPI for All Urban Consumers (CPI-U) and the CPI for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W).…

One good source to look at economic indices is the Census website. There, the Able Corporation can look at how the key general economic indices correlate with each other for the last five years listed. The first economic index to examine is housing starts. In 2003, the total amount of privately owned houses to start in that year was 1,499. In 2004, this amount was 1,611. In 2005 the amount of housing starts was 1,716; in 2006 housing starts were noted at 1,465. In 2007, the amount of housing starts was 1,046 (New Privately Owned Housing Units Started, 2008).…

The U.S Bureau of Labor Statistics is a federal government agency that collects, analyzes and provides the public with statistics data of labor economics within the US and some foreign countries. The Bureau of Labor Statistics provides statistical data on things such as: how American spend time and money, inflations, workplace violence and injury, wages, business costs to jobseeker resources. The site is arranged by topics that are further broken down into subcategories like gender, geographical region, ethnicity, etc. I found both the wage information for women and minorities as well as the jobseeker resources and statistics to be very useful for future career planning and self-enlightenment. Nevertheless, the information provided by the…
