The decade starts with the election of a new President, John. F. Kennedy, the youngest President of all the country had ever had. The main thing that Kennedy brought with his victory in elections was Hope for better future. He introduced a slogan “New Frontier”, that promised a great break-through in everything. However he had to face crises. So, in 1962 the Cuban missile crisis took place. It was a dangerous situation when the Soviet Union began to build bases for nuclear missiles in Cuba. President Kennedy complained to the Soviet government, stopped all ships from going to Cuba, and threatened to take military action. This caused a lot of international anxiety, but after a few days the Soviet Union agreed to remove the missile base. Peace Corps were created by J.F. Kennedy to establish the authority of the US in Asia, Africa and Latin America. Young volunteers were sent to the Third World countries, they worked there and helped the population to gain progress. Also Kennedy passed the law against segregation in education and got society support for this. In 1964 he was preparing for his second term and had to go to Texas, Dallas, which was a part of his pre-election strategy. Unfortunately, John Kennedy was assassinated there. The country suffered the great loss. After Kennedy's death Lyndon B. Johnson became the President of the USA, who promised to continue the policy of Kennedy. In 1964 Johnson declared that he would make the United States into a “Great Society” in which there would be no place for poverty and racial segregation. He developed a set of programs that would help poor people. His presidency lead to economic boom and improvement of living standards. However, Johnson's reputation was undermined because of Vietnam War, in which the participation of the US crossed all the bounds of sanity.
