1. Marco Polo was responsible for stirring European interest in China.
He did so by telling stories of his adventures in China. Polo described Asia as a world of shimmering silks, fragrant spices, and unlimited gold.
2. Columbus planned on reaching Asia by going west around the globe, where as da Gama’s went around the coast of Africa, and sailing to India.
3. Some technological inventions that helped sailors in their exploration and discovery of new lands were compasses, astrolabes, and a Portuguese ship called a carvel.
4. The name given to the economic system during the age of exploration and colonization whereby colonies were exploited for the benefits and wealth they could bring to the mother country was mercantilism.
5. Martin Luther’s main disagreement with the Roman Catholic Church was how people could be saved from their sins. Luther preached that people were saved by a work of God through trust in Jesus Christ, not from penance.
* The teachings of Luther supported the ideals of freedom by stating that whoever trusts in Jesus will be justified by God, and that Christians should be free from the authority of the Roman Catholic Church. Luther supported the ideals of individualism by emphasizing that Christians should not depend on others for their spiritual health and well being. And last he supported the ideals of equality by questioning the legitimacy of the Roman Catholic Church, which led to great changes in the culture of Europe.
The teachings of John Calvin supported the ideals of freedom by attempting to restructure the society of Geneva so that every human life experienced the renewal of the Reformation. Calvin supported the ideals of individualism by emphasizing universal literacy as well as advanced education for the clergy. Lastly Calvin supported the ideals of equality by emphasizing that Christians should submit to government, and because of that a better form of government that would protect the liberty of Christians was formed.

The three basic groups of American Indians explorers encountered were: the Pueblos; located in the Southwest along the Grand Canyon, the Mound Builders; located along the Ohio River Valley and eastward to the Chesapeake Bay area, New York, and New England, and the Eastern Woodland Indians; located in the Southeast along the Atlantic and coast into the Northeast. They also spread to the Mississippi, Ohio and Tennessee rivers after 1200.

4. Sir Walter Raleigh financed the first two English attempts to settle North America.
The first settlement was located on Roanoke Island, located in the sound of the Outer Banks in North Carolina. The second settlement was also located on Roanoke Island. This second settlement is know as the “Lost Colony”.
5. The English furthered its control over North America by promising the Dutch colonists preservation of life, liberty, and property n return for their surrender.
* The defeat of the Spanish Armada in 1588 is important to the history of European settlement in North America because it secured the future of the Protestants in England. God used this to pave the way for English dominance in North America.
