From the last part of the presentation that I listened too, I thought Mayor Hayek was very good and it seemed that people learned a lot from him. I think that it is important to have an influential political person on campus, like Mayor Hayek. It shows that that they care about others and think we are important to take time out of his day to come and talk to us.

I think that civil engagement is something that is very important. It is good for people to give back to their community. I think that you can also learn some very valuable leadership and social skills that will help you in your future. I don’t think that these volunteer experiences need to be big. Just being active and doing something is helping and a way that you can learn from something.

Some of the things that I am involved with outside of school would be the Make-A-Wish foundation, Tutoring, and activities with my church. I have learned a lot about my self through volunteering with these activities and have grown as a person. I would encourage everyone to try and pick one volunteer group that they feel passionate about and spend time-sharing your talents with it. I know it is something that you will not regret doing.

DR. Michael Hawes gave an informative speech on Economics, politics, pipelines and the election: as well as Canada-US relations in an increasingly complex world. He used a PowerPoint to portray his ideas and talked about topics such as roots of Canadian foreign policy, the rising impact of the U.S, free trade and North American integration, and diversification. His speech wasn’t that interesting to younger adult’s such as me because he talked a lot about politics but he was very funny keeping me entertained which is always a plus. He established a clear central thesis, although he said “this is my central thesis” and established his main points. He transitioned into each point individually and took time to explain each concept it took a long time but he didn’t shy away from all the details.…

Volunteering for service hours changed my outlook on life. I worked with the Hydrocephalus Association in both eleventh and twelfth grade. The Hydrocephalus Association focuses on three things community, clarity, and cure. Hydrocephalus is a condition defined by an abnormal, excessive accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) within the cavities of the brain. Some people with this condition can live a normal life being unnoticeable while other have difficulties. The association works on awareness to find a cure, clarity in helping families further understand the condition, and a community which will always be supportive. Service hours can sometimes be a hassle but once I started volunteering with that association it became fun because I was…

Sara thought she was never going to be able to work to fund her education and lost all hope. With the implementation of DACA her dream of receiving an education at UCLA became a reality. Another speaker that stood out was a second year by the name of Erika. Erika’s mother suffers from the mental illness Schizophrenia. Her mother was deported and arrested for being undocumented and Erika’s upbringing was tough. Erika closed her presentation with a quote that stayed with me, it goes as follows “you do with what you can or have”. No matter how tough the circumstances are in life you have to deal with what you have and continue living. My friend Josh had the privilege to speak in front of the audience and it was nice hearing what he had to say. He made good points about the citizenship test. He said that the citizenship is bullshit and that it is crazy how the government makes people from different countries learn about the history of U.S. United States citizens probably would not pass the test if they were tested. I believe that injustice is prevalent for undocumented people and there needs to be a…

I personal liked Wadhwa speech the most I felt the fact and arguments he used were the most influwential because he not only just talks about education and jobs he talks about what you get out of college such as learning how to deal with failure how to addapt and over come and crucial communication skills. But he also uses a personal tactic to back up his arguments by talking about his his cultural and how people use discriminate his poeple and snake charms but not his people are ceos. Then finally he talks about globalization and how we need to start massive training programs because if we don't have a country of college degree people…

Civic engagement at Drexel hopefully entails volunteering at a local hospital in Philadelphia. I will continue my volunteering at home when I can. During my time here, I will be taking part in volunteering but not willingly contribute to the university goal to become the most civically engaged. I will not volunteer to make Drexel look better. That is not the purpose of volunteering. Drexel wants the recognizing but I want the difference the work is going to make. It would be a great goal to have for a university if it was made for the right…

You are not only helping someone in areas where they can’t necessarily help themselves, but also helping yourself. You are gaining character and leadership skills to better your future career, There are many issues in the community that a simple act of service can help. Volunteering is also very valuable when it comes to entering college. Workplace experience allows you to strengthen your resume, allowing you to get a better occupation. The most common skills gained are networking, leadership, and interpersonal skills. Networking is an important skill to have as it can supply you with future recommendations. By giving your time and showing compassion for the people in need you will help them to feel comfortable getting the assistance that is so necessary to their survival and health. Volunteering is a way to help that has the ability to give back. There are many great benefits to volunteer work, and not only by helping people in need. According to Shayla in Benefits of Volunteering in College, volunteering can also "build your network", "strengthen your resume", and of course give you the knowledge to better understand the people you are giving your time to (Shayla). Building your network will be a vital part of life when trying to find jobs, internships, and make business connections. People you meet through volunteering have the ability to forever affect your life and may well continue to be a part of your life for years to come. What better place to meet people who share the same drive to help others as you do than at an organization who helps feed Americans in need? These hours will not go unnoticed on your resume either. "Scholarship committees love to learn how youth are helping their communities." These hours will not only be valued by the people they help, as you spend time helping others your outlook on life is changed by the skills and real life experience you gain from it. While giving your time you will see that people who are in need are no different from…

From this activity I have learn that just attending university and receiving grades is not all that is required to attaining a future with a pleasant job. Volunteering and work experience are also necessary, therefore, I would consider joining a volunteer or work opportunity while attending university. The next step I am going to take toward my preferred future is to obtain a job, I will do this by applying to jobs that require communicating with people, working with children or opportunity for networking. Another step that I can take is to volunteer at my old high school, I have already worked at an elementary school, and therefore it would be nice to see if I would have a similar or dissimilar experience at the high…

Yes, volunteering teaches you social skills and it looks good on a resume, but none of that stuff matters if you don’t have a good character. Your character is something that you can’t get rid of, but you can change. Volunteering can change you into a more patient, loving, and smart individual. In the past I’ve volunteered for the Carl Perkins Center, which deals with children who have been abused. Working with these children showed me how blessed I am. It made me more thankful, for my parents and family members. I made it my job to make those children happier than they were when I walked in. By the time I left I was the one who was more affected. Those children didn’t care about worldly things; all they wanted was your attention. This showed me that the gift of time is sometimes the best gift a person can…

At the end of my senior year, I had almost 60 hours of community service. There was a mandatory volunteering even for all the seniors. My friends and I volunteered the most difficult one out of the choices. We have to travel up to the mountains to teach aboriginal (Taiwanese) children English and some American cultures. It was a great pleasure to spend time with the children. My friends and I had taught them different things from American culture, and they also taught us things we had never seen. After a week of volunteering on the mountain, I ended up graduating with 70 hours of…
