How did Siam resisted from colonization. In the middle of the 19th century, European expanded to Southeast Asia. European colonized most of the Southeast Asia except Thailand. The British colonized India, Burma, and the Malay Peninsula. The French colonized Cambodia, Vietnam, and Laos.
There are three Siamese kings during the imperialism or colonization. These are Mongkut (1851-1868), Chulalongkorn (1868-1910) and Vajiravudh (1910-1925), also known as Rama IV, Rama V and Rama VI. King Chulalongkorn (or Rama V) reign longest and emphasis on modernization.
During that time king Mongkut ruled Siam. He had seen that many countries in Southeast Asia were colonized by the European. The countries that colonized are surrounded Thailand. King Mongkut didn’t want to be colonized by the European. So he modernized the country, he also got many ideas from the Western also as King Rama V. They went to study at the Western. They brought back new cultures and ways of living. They set up education for people, so that people would have some knowledge. They had idea to build railroads all over and much other transportation. He also approved women’s right. He banned forced marriages of all kinds and the selling of one's wife to pay off a debt. King Chulalongkorn established a standing professional military for the first time in Siamese history. He freed the slavery in that time. He came up with the idea the Traiphum, which was a geo-astrological map created before the arrival of Westerners, described “a path between two mountain ranges through which the stars, planets, moon and sun pass."
Siam became a state in the image of its European competitors. This made the Siamese kings much stronger than it would have been. They were able to make treaties with France and Britain. Eventually, either France or Britain seen it to be in their interests to colonize Siam. In 1896 Britain and France codified this by
