Use of Character Dee in “The Story Everyday Use”
The story is about two sisters Dee and Maggie conflicting about a quilt, at which the sister Dee had such an attitude about the whole situation.
Dee is very stylish: She’s flashy, Likes to dress in style, she dresses as if that’s how she was taught, and she acts like she forgetting her roots. Dee is snobby she acts like she is on top of the world. She acts as if she’s better than the other sister. Dee is very bossy; she wants things done her way or no way at all. She can be very demanding.
The conflict mama and Dee have a dispute about who should get their grandmother quilts. Maggie has internal conflicts within herself being she has a tough time dealing with her burns from the house fire.
It’s important for mama to narrate so the readers can have a clear understanding on what’s really going on. Mama see’s Dee as the daughter who “made it and lives her life as the TV show by Johnny Carson this is your life, she sees Maggie as a witty little girl, and also as a lame animal” page 6 paragraph 3, in the italic writing.
Mama sees herself as a large, big-boned woman with rough, man-working hands. Mama describes herself as a hardworking woman who deserves the same as Dee. But being she was not “made” like Dee, she won’t get the same recognition. So mama sees herself less than others.
